Solid drill press

Solid drill press

03-08-2015 05:26 AM by TheFridge | 8 comments »

Ive been using it regularly for a couple weeks now. Mainly with a 5” cross slide vise to mill and drill wood and metal. Pros – being able to put the handles on either side of the press – runs smooth with little runout – the laser setup is actually nice for drilling consecutive holes. I haven’t found it to be off when adjusting table height – I didn’t have to pay more for an under powered jet benchtop. Cons- the base is a ...

Two weeks in - Solid saw, many many minor complaints

Two weeks in - Solid saw, many many minor complaints

Disclaimer: this is my first band saw. Indeed, the first time I have USED any band saw. So I don’t have much of a basis for comparison. However, after two weeks with this saw I think I can give a pretty good ‘new-user’ perspective. I really struggled with the star rating. This seems to be a fundamentally good saw, and I don’t necessarily regret it. However, the last two weeks have seen a lot of frustrations that I was not expecting from the fancy Porter-Cable ...

Horrible quality, not what I expected from Porter Cable

Horrible quality, not what I expected from Porter Cable

I am honestly trying to be fair with this review, but I am extremely frustrated with this scroll saw. In the past I have been a happy owner of many Porter Cable products. At this point I am reluctant to buy any more. About a year ago my wife started to enjoy using the old clunky scroll saw we had to make kids puzzles. She got pretty good at it and now does it as a small side business. Each week she spends about 8-10 hours creating puzzles on the scroll saw for sale at our local farmers ...

I hope this circular saw will be the last I ever need?

I hope this circular saw will be the last I ever need?

If anyone were to ask me what to look for in a circular saw, I would say my must-haves are: A cast shoe Lever-locks for adjustments for easier Arbor lock for blade changes A good feel in your hands A decent price at or below $100 (at today’s prices) This Porter Cable met all of the criteria in a very bare bones way. After about 6 months of use, it has not disappointed me. I’d consider this to be an example of the perfect non-track circular saw for me. The Goo...

height adjustment

height adjustment

10-27-2014 03:08 PM by Scrollers | 1 comment »

I have owned this saw for almost two years. I am going to retire in a little over a year and I have been setting up my workshop with tools that I feel I will need at that time. I haven’t been able to work down there very much but have done some work there. My question is the height adjustment. It won’t go down. It is in the up position now but won’t move. It has been this way ever since I have had it but didn’t do any thing with because I didn’t have the time. No...

Porter Cable 20v MAX lithium cordless tools

Porter Cable 20v MAX lithium cordless tools

The circular saw is a disappointment. It has cutting power but the shoe is wiggly. If you need a precise circular saw, choose a different format. Otherwise the P-C tools I tested are good quality withpowerful, high-torque motors and relatively basic features.

Porter Cable 18 Volt Biscuit / Plate Joiner

Porter Cable 18 Volt Biscuit / Plate Joiner

I know this might be a slightly odd tool review and if you are familiar with the Porter Cable 18 volt line up you are probably scratching your head wondering if you missed something. No you did not, and no you cannot buy this off the shelf at a big box store. But with a little bit of patience and ingenuity this is possible. This is my first biscuit joiner, and I wanted a cordless one. A while back I bought into the 18 volt porter cable lineup (if I knew then what I know now I might have we...

First impressions

First impressions

I just picked the drill press up from Lowes today. They honored a 25% Harbor Freight coupon which brought the price down to about $260 out the door. My daughter and I got it set up in about 30 minutes and so far am very impressed. I haven’t measured the runout yet. I do wish that they would make it easier to tilt the table. This is not an issue with this drill press specifically, it was the same on the bench top Ryobi that I just sold. I will update this review as I get more time ...

Solid performer, but change the saw blade is a pain

Solid performer, but change the saw blade is a pain

That’s probably all the saw you’d need – My wife Famous last words for a saw that I quickly became annoyed with. I purchased the saw about 3 years ago during a Lowes fathers day sale. For the price, was quite the bargain. I’ve used the saw for for a much of home repair/renovation jobs, as well as many woodworking projects to break down sheet goods and solid lumber. At 13amps, it’s rated to have less power than many 15amp saws, but I doubt many would experi...

Great Saw but Assembly was Quirky

Great Saw but Assembly was Quirky

This is my first band saw so perhaps this may not be the best review, but with that in mind I will proceed anyway. I had been looking at bandsaws for a while, and was trying to find one that I thought would fit my needs now and into the future. I just could not justify a benchtop saw as those are not well suited for resawing, but I also wanted to stay in a reasonable budget. Ultimately it came down to this one and the Ridgid. I chose this saw over the orange one due to the closed base which h...
