Quality saw, worth the investment

Quality saw, worth the investment

I have only had this saw for a few weeks but I have put it to pretty heavy use in that time building a couple Adirondack chairs and a few jigs. I am very glad I own this saw. It is worlds apart from most introductory jig saws (Black&Decker, Skill, Craftsman, Chicago…) I am not trying to be snooty but I have owned these and I am glad I upgraded. From where I stand here are the saws pros and cons. PROS:-Quick-Change blade clamp allows fast blade changes – no tools required. O...

Porter-Cable 390K ROS

Porter-Cable 390K ROS

The Porter-Cable 390K 5” variable speed low profile Random Orbital Sander is a quality tool that delivers great performance. The low profile makes this sander much easier to control than other, taller sanders. The motor used is a constant response motor, which keeps it from bogging down regardless of the amount of pressure you put on it. The 390K is the most aggressive sander I own (I also have sanders from Milwaukee, B&D, and Craftsman) in terms of the material it will remove, y...

Sloppy plunge

Sloppy plunge

Dear Jocks, I recently Bought the 893pk router package from Porter-Cable. The plunge base had so much slop in the slide that it was a joke. I sent the following inquiry to Porter-Cable and was automatically redirected to the stock answer page. In the common interest I wish to share the following. To Porter Cable: I recently purchased the 893pk router package. I discovered that the 8931 plunge base has 1/32” of slop in the bushing on the secondary guide rod. I went back to the store a...

It's a huge upgrade from what I had

It's a huge upgrade from what I had

I had this craftsman 5/8hp router that I inherited from my father-in-law a while ago. It was all plastic and really light. I used it to do some decorative inlay work, and for that it was ok. I did find that it’s light weight made it easy to make unintended movements when doing light touch work. I figured a heavier router would help. I decided on the 895PK because it comes with a height adjustment crank that goes through a table insert to engage the elevation adjuster on the fixed bas...

Loving this sander

Loving this sander

I purchased this belt sander from a big box store the other day for 170.00 plus 10% off for my military discount. I am fairly new to woodworking (about 1 year) so I dont know alot of terms but I’ll try and get this review done in laymans terms.. To start I am loving this sander, Its my first one so I may be biased but it has really opened up what I can accomplish in my small shop. So heres my review based on things I thought were important Packing and Setup: Inside the box was the...

First impressions

First impressions

I just picked the drill press up from Lowes today. They honored a 25% Harbor Freight coupon which brought the price down to about $260 out the door. My daughter and I got it set up in about 30 minutes and so far am very impressed. I haven’t measured the runout yet. I do wish that they would make it easier to tilt the table. This is not an issue with this drill press specifically, it was the same on the bench top Ryobi that I just sold. I will update this review as I get more time ...

Solid router but obsolete design

Solid router but obsolete design

I got this router, guide and dovetail jig because I wanted to make a small chest of drawers and thought this would be the way to go. I have used the router several times after that but I wasn’t really liking the clean up after the job was done. Dust collection is not part of the design. PC relies on an obsolete design and this is the main reason for giving it 2 stars. The positive- The tool looks like it is never going to brake and it certainly runs that way, the base has a nice...

Review of the Porter Cable 8" Grinder

Review of the Porter Cable 8" Grinder

648 days ago by thewoodworker01 | 6 comments »

Recently I just bought a grinder for the workshop to sharpen my lathe tools. I looked at other grinders and I could really only find a couple grinders with variable speed. This one has variable speed from 2000-3400 rpms. It is a great grinder. I have heard a lot of other people say that this grinder is junk. It isn’t. I have heard people saying that the motor turned over two times and it died. This hasn’t happened to me; I asked the salesman at Lowe’s if I could test the gri...

Porter Cable 10" Table Saw model: 270TS

Porter Cable 10" Table Saw model: 270TS

Well, this is my first review but this product impressed me so much I wanted to write one. For starters, I’m not nearly as knowledgeable as most on here and consider myself a beginner. I’ve never had access to really “nice” machines so always kinda “made due” with what I had. Up until now my table saw was a contractor style Makita 10” saw, which really isn’t capable or designed for precision…it’s for rough cutting 2X6’s and ...

Porter Cable Table Saw Model PCB270TS

Porter Cable Table Saw Model PCB270TS

Recently, I had ran into a problem with my old Craftsman table saw. I decided to replace it instead of repairing it. Having used it for a couple weekends and making quite a few cuts, I’ve come to really appreciate this machine. My views might not be fully objective having come from a twenty year old Craftsman, but this new saw is just fantastic. Yes, there are a few shortcomings (which I will detail), but the pros far outweigh the cons. To begin with, the PCB270TS quick and easy...
