The Pocket Hole Drilling Jig Project Book

The Pocket Hole Drilling Jig Project Book

I don’t believe in reviewing or giving opinions on woodworking books unless you can legitimately say you’ve built at least a couple of items from the book.  I’ve completed the end tables in this book, and currently I’m working on the framed mirror project.  Now that I have presented my only credentials, and gotten that out-of-the-way; I have to say that I really enjoyed this book!  If you’re newer to the Kreg Jig you’ll definitely enjoy it! An excellent guide - even for a beginner

An excellent guide - even for a beginner

So, do you want to play in the yard with the big kids? Impress The Schwarz? Follow in the footsteps of St. Roy, or just be able to actually use that saw that grandpa left you? Then I would recommend this DVD highly. As a disclaimer, I’m no saw expert, and in fact, apart from my trusty dovetail saw, I haven’t had that much experience with other hand (panel) saws. I’ve never sharpened a saw before. So, look for a blog entry next week on how my first sharpening went. R...

Popular Woodworking The New Traditional Woodworker by Jim Tolpin

I recieved this book in the mail after pre-ordering on Amazon.com. It is all I hoped it would be. The book is well written and full of great photography. It covers the workshop, workbenches, hand tools, and runs you through a set of projects to make shop aids while demonstrating techniques for use of a very wide range of hand tools. I’m sure I will make a number of the projects in the book before it is all said and done. The book was released on May 4th and you can find it at ...

I just received my June issue of Popular Woodworking. I have come to enjoy this magazine, propelled by Schwartz, Lang, and Huey. But I have to wonder if a bad case of the dumb ass hasn’t overtaken the editorial staff. Consider the story, “The 130 Best Books on Woodworking”. It looks like a lot of care and effort went in to compiling a list of books the staff could agree on. But then they upped the ante by going to the field, to the annointed experts for their personal favori...

Greene & Greene Furniture: Poems of Wood & Light

I just finished reading David Mathias book Greene & Greene Furniture: Poems of Wood & Light. This is the 1st book I’ve read on Greene and Greene and really enjoyed it. Great pictures and great info and for me I felt it was great value for the cost of the book. I won’t go much into it as Todd Clippinger did a great write up. http://lumberjocks.com/toddc/blog/17691

Popular Woodworking: The 10 Commandments of Finishing

I purchased the download version of this book and saved a few bucks using my discount code from The Wood Whisperer site. It is also available as a DVD. The download is in the .mp4 format and will play using Quick Time. The purchase, download and viewing with Quick Time was effortless. The download is 3 separate 30-minute videos at 160 MB each. If your download connection is slow, be aware that it may take some time. Once playing, the video quality on full screen lacks in clarity a bit b...

Great Arts and Craft furniture resource

Great Arts and Craft furniture resource

I received this book as a Christmas gift and after a few looks through I can recommend this. I has a good bit of info regarding arts & craft furniture including drawings with dimensions on several pieces. Overall, a good read. If you are not familiar with the Grove Park Inn it is an incredible Arts and Craft style resort located in Asheville NC, full of A&C furniture and opened for business in 1913. If you want to check out the Inn’s website or have some extra coin for a $...

Turning Basics with Steve Shanesy - DVD Review

Turning Basics with Steve Shanesy - DVD Review

This week I was excited to receive a complimentary copy of “Turning Basics for Furniture Makers” from Popular Woodworking. With my shop currently out of commission, a woodworking DVD really hits the spot! Now most of you know I consider myself a utilitarian turner, meaning, I usually only turn when a project calls for it. So when I watch a typical turning DVD, my attention usually starts to drift pretty quickly. Most of these titles are produced by amazingly talented wood turn...

A strong follow-up to Ventura's first band saw book

A strong follow-up to Ventura's first band saw book

Price: $18.24 at Amazon. Buying used or from Half.com (thanks Jim) might help you find it cheaper. Like many here at LJs, I throoughly enjoy making band saw boxes. My first inspiration for these was Lois Keener Ventura’s “Building Beautiful Boxes with your Band Saw” book. This is a “sequel” to that first book. I’ll be hunting that review down and posting for that one later on as well. I have posted a bunch of reviews on Amazon and am migrating the woo...

Check out from the Library...

I was astonished to actually find something at the local library that I found at the B&B earlier this year! I actually found a lot of new books in the section where I had combed over many times before. When I saw this particular one, I checked it out because I saw a sideboard that would fit some storage in our house perfectly. Unfortunately, it wasn’t until I got home that I realized there isn’t as much plan in this book as a parts list and some finished product. This seem...
