My opinion on two digital downloads from Popular Wodworking website

My opinion on two digital downloads from Popular Wodworking website

Hi LJs! Since I live in Colombia it’s rather difficult and expensive purchasing books, DVDs and tools in general to be shipped this part of the continent. For that reason I tried some digital downloads, specifically Christopher Schwarz’ video Handplane Basics – A Better Way to Use Bench Planes and Jim Tolpin’s The New Traditional Woodworker. Handplane Basics – A Better Way to Use Bench PlanesAfter waiting nearly an hour I started watching the video and what...

I’ll keep this simple. Popular Woodworking is running a special deal on their online e-book subscriptions. For ten bucks a month (half off) you get full access to back issues of both Popular Woodworking and Woodworking magazines, plus tons of great books that usually cost a bundle. I subscribed because I learn a lot from reading stuff like this, and the price was too good to pass up. It’s a limited time thing, so if you’re interested, you’d better get on it! Here...

Great video on saw sharpening

Great video on saw sharpening

This afternoon I finished watching “Sharpening your handsaws with Ron Herman” on Shop Class on Demand from Popular Woodworking. It’s an online streaming version of the DVD of the same name. I enjoyed it so much and feel like I learned so much from it that I’m going to order a copy of the DVD to keep when my subscription runs out. Ron Herman is a traditional housewright in Columbus, OH, and the owner of Antiquity Builders. They specialize in period accurate home buil...

Ok here it is….we have waited and waited and then that great day came when we finally got the news…..the Woodrights Shop is finally going to be released on dvd!!!!! Before I even review this first installment I want to say in my opinion this set may only be for the diehard Roy Underhill/Woodrights shop fan only, in regards to if you are wondering if the marked down $39.99 to $29.99 price tag is worth your money for each double disc dvd package. The shows content….is pr...

Bait and switch sales tactics?

Bait and switch sales tactics?

Shopclass on Demand is a webiste that contains a number of woodowrking videos. I signed up in March during a promotion that promised 1/2 price access for life. That is I paid $25 for six months access and would be allowed to renew for the same price for life. Seemed like a good deal at the time. I was initially happy with the deal. They had seeded the site with a number of good videos that they typically sell as DVDs for $25 or so. Since then they have added 2-3 more videos each week....

Popular Woodworking Easy to Build Birdhouses A Natural Approach

Popular Woodworking Easy to Build Birdhouses A Natural Approach

I love all things BIRD.  There, I said it.  I like birds, birdhouses, bird feeders, bird baths, bird stores, and most of all I enjoy making some of these things.  Surprisingly though, I’ve never bought a project book of just bird houses(although many of the books I have include some plans).  I picked up the book Easy to Build Birdhouses - A Natural Approach: Must Know Info to Attract and Keep the Birds You Want (Popular Woodworking) at Amazon for a really reasonable price.  I have thoro...

The Pocket Hole Drilling Jig Project Book

The Pocket Hole Drilling Jig Project Book

I don’t believe in reviewing or giving opinions on woodworking books unless you can legitimately say you’ve built at least a couple of items from the book.  I’ve completed the end tables in this book, and currently I’m working on the framed mirror project.  Now that I have presented my only credentials, and gotten that out-of-the-way; I have to say that I really enjoyed this book!  If you’re newer to the Kreg Jig you’ll definitely enjoy it! Danny Pro...

An excellent guide - even for a beginner

An excellent guide - even for a beginner

So, do you want to play in the yard with the big kids? Impress The Schwarz? Follow in the footsteps of St. Roy, or just be able to actually use that saw that grandpa left you? Then I would recommend this DVD highly. As a disclaimer, I’m no saw expert, and in fact, apart from my trusty dovetail saw, I haven’t had that much experience with other hand (panel) saws. I’ve never sharpened a saw before. So, look for a blog entry next week on how my first sharpening went. R...

I recieved this book in the mail after pre-ordering on Amazon.com. It is all I hoped it would be. The book is well written and full of great photography. It covers the workshop, workbenches, hand tools, and runs you through a set of projects to make shop aids while demonstrating techniques for use of a very wide range of hand tools. I’m sure I will make a number of the projects in the book before it is all said and done. The book was released on May 4th and you can find it at ...

Are there no women?

Are there no women?

I just received my June issue of Popular Woodworking. I have come to enjoy this magazine, propelled by Schwartz, Lang, and Huey. But I have to wonder if a bad case of the dumb ass hasn’t overtaken the editorial staff. Consider the story, “The 130 Best Books on Woodworking”. It looks like a lot of care and effort went in to compiling a list of books the staff could agree on. But then they upped the ante by going to the field, to the annointed experts for their personal favori...
