Cuts Like a Dream

For those of you who don’t know, LJ Wally331 is currently a senior in high school. He also happens to be rather skilled at making hand saws. I commissioned Chris to make me a 10”, 14 TPI dovetail saw. It has a brass back, hand-shaped African bloodwood handle, and hand-filed teeth. The saw’s split nuts are hand made as well. To put it simply, this saw cuts wonderfully. I had no problem sawing parallel lines down a piece of scrap pine and walnut, and the saw rode bea...

Excellent budget-friendly compressor for brad nailing and tire inflation

Excellent budget-friendly compressor for brad nailing and tire inflation

Recently I was heading to a big box store to pick up a Porter-Cable 6-gal air compressor but stopped into a local pawn shop first to see what they had to offer. I walked out with this cute little compressor for $25 (it is only $69 new at Home Depot or Amazon, with accessories). I figured it’ll be a nice starter compressor to run a cheap HFT brad nailer, and the price could not be beat. I could upgrade later if need be. Since I have no immediate plans to buy a framing nailer or spraye...

Pretty much what I was looking for.

Pretty much what I was looking for.

I wanted to add a foot switch to a scroll saw I just bought. The pedal types seemed better suited to a sitting position (I was thinking sewing machine). I will be standing so I looked for a low profile that had the pivot at the top. I ordered this one ($16.84) and received it yesterday. It’s available in three configurations: switch w/6ft pigtail; switch w/6ft cord and piggyback 15amp/120v plug; switch alone. I ordered the last option because I wanted a little bit longer cord and ...

Custom made sanding belts for the band saw

Custom made sanding belts for the band saw

02-28-2013 07:51 PM by PatrickB | 4 comments »

I ordered these a week ago and love them. You can order them any length with many widths to choose from. I ordered 3 ea. in 1/4”, 3/8”, & 1/2” in varying grits and they are the cats meow. The only down side was it took a while for them to arrive, about two weeks. Remove the bearing guides and set the tension and away you go. I’ve used them on end grain, curves, tight areas, they fit just about any where. The main thing is have one of those sanding belt belt cleaner...

1, 2, and 3 inch sanding discs

1, 2, and 3 inch sanding discs

I heard about these here on another post and decided to order some. I cut my own paper and it sticks well however it wears out fast due to the small area. If you press too hard for too long you’ll heat the pad up and the foam will melt. A bit of CA glue will fix it. The sponges under the abrasive are great for hard to get to places that require intense sanding that you couldn’t do with any other tool. I use it on my turnings to get even sanding along the curves and to avo...

SE 10 High Speed Black Carbon Rasp Burr Wood Working Rotary

SE 10 High Speed Black Carbon Rasp Burr Wood Working Rotary

These are very small, only about an inch or two. They can be used in a drill press or a cordless drill. These shaper rasps are really nice if you work with some free hand woodworking. They are great for matching up round surfaces, they don’t tear your work out either. Very good buy and as important as a good set of chisels. Strongly recommend especially at the price amazon has of under 10$. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00339ECVS/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

Inexpensive Remote

Inexpensive Remote

09-23-2012 02:24 AM by TheDane | 22 comments »

After repeated problems with the remote control on my dust collector, I hit on a less costly and (so far) more reliable solution. One day I was walking through the electrical department at the local big box and saw these … they sell for $11.99. For that, you get the wireless switch that plugs into the service outlet like a wall wart and a remote control that can manage three of these devices. I bought 3 of them … use one on my air cleaner, one on my dust collector, and one o...
