I finally got my DC man it sucks

I finally got my DC man it sucks

2017 days ago by Jim | 18 comments »

I ordered my Penn State 1 1/2 hp “Dustroyer” a week ago Sunday and I finally got it today. I was home with a “sick” 2 year old that when I asked if he wanted to go out to the shop he grabbed his coat. He helped me set it up witch took about an hour would have been less time with less help. The directions stink. I had to stick it in the addition until mommy came home and it stands 92” tall so it has to be lined up justright in the shop to fit. This evening I hook...

Pennstate Midi Lathe

Pennstate Midi Lathe

2020 days ago by interpim | 12 comments »

EDIT: I have now had this lathe for over a year now, and I am still very happy with it. I have now turned bowls, pens, spindles etc… on it, and it has done very well. I still haven’t pulled the trigger on the extension, but to be perfectly honest, I haven’t had a need for an extension yet. I did purchase a barracuda chuck system from PSI, as well as a new set of Benjamin Best lathe chisels. The motor has held up well, and I am still on the first belt that came with it....

Penn State Industries Temp 142CX Dust Collector

The dust collection unit that I chose for my 14 X 21 shop was the Temp142CX from Penn State Industries. Some specifications and reasons for picking this unit are as follows: 2 HP, 220V Motor14” Impeller – 6 Fin½ Micron Filter CartridgesUp to 12 DropsUp to 30 Ft. RunsUp to 1200 Sq. Ft.5 Yr. Warranty I used the economy 26 GA duct work which was noticeably heavier than the stores. Penn State had everything I needed to put this unit in. There was nothing that I ordered that they did not hav...

PSI Strata Blank Impulse Buy

PSI Strata Blank Impulse Buy

2072 days ago by dmann | 5 comments »

On impulse I added a couple of Strata Bowl blanks to my last pen order from PSI. This entry is part project and part review. I included before/after pictures for comparison. Looking at the blanks when I got them I was a little wary of putting them on the lathe. There seemed to be a lot of dry joints. I picked a blank out today and used the bandsaw to rough out a circle. After cutting off the rough outside edges the integrity of the blank looked better and I decided to give a go at turning ...

Lathe Duplicator for Mini Lathes

Lathe Duplicator for Mini Lathes

I’ve got this Penn State Lathe Duplicator I have mine mounted on a Ryobi Mini Lathe. I believe that it works for many brands. It’s not an all inclusive duplicator like the Vega. If you can make a pattern in something about 1/16” thick then you can fit it into the holding mechanism. Here are the Penn State templates This is a brass pattern of a small spindle that I’m making. The spindles are for a Vintage Sleigh I’m making. You mount your blank in the...

My new Penn State Lathe.

My new Penn State Lathe.

I bought this lathe to make a cane for my Mother-in-Law. I had a small Ryobi lathe that I used for making pens but it only had around 16” length. Not enough room for a cane. I bought the variable speed version from Penn State Industries because I felt that it would be easier to use. It comes with a belt drive and a 3 step pulley. You can change the belt drive to change the speeds. The variable speed gives you a range within each of the pulley ranges. The motor is Motor: 1/2HP (650-38...

my dust collector

my dust collector

Let me first say that this is the only dust collector that I have ever owned so I can’t make a comparision betweein this one and any other collector. Now for the review. From out of the box it took me about 3 hours to have it hanging on the wall. This sucker is heavy so you better have a friend or two to help with the lifting. After the installaton I was surprised at how strong this collector is. My shop is 20’x40’ and I can put my planner at the end of my shop and it has no...
