This book review is from the May-June 2011 issue of our LumberJocks’ eMag Fox Chapel Publishing is donating another book for a free draw! Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning by Doc Green   The tagline for the book “Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning” says, “Everything you need to know to secure wood on your lathe” and I don’t think that is an exaggeration. What more can there be when you have section headings of: Drive Centers and Live ...

Tables, chairs and more

This review was first posted in the April, 2011 issue of the LumberJocks’ eMag   Fox Chapel Publishing recently sent me another book to review and offer for a free draw: Outdoor Furniture by the Editors at Skills Institute Press. With the books’ chapters including chairs, benches, tables, swings and gliders and garden projects, Outdoor Furniture pretty much has everything covered for outdoor furnishings. Besides the projects themselves the book focuses on how to build furn...

one of my favourite books!

(This review was first posted in the February, 2011 issue of the LumberJocks’ eMag) Fox Chapel Publishing recently sent me another book to review and offer for a free draw: Simply Wood by Roshaan Ganief. At first glance, my thought was, “Wow, this looks like a great book – right up my alley”. The 40 projects included in the book appear to be relatively easy to complete, if only because of the clear directions and photos of the “how to” process. The d...

this review was first posted in our LJ eMag, January 2010 Have you been inspired by the carvers’ projects here at LumberJocks.com, such as the work by Jordan, Mikelknot, and Mark Decou , to name a few? Is “carving a face” on your list of woodworking projects but you just don’t know where to start? Here is a great place to begin—the resource book: “Carving The Human Face”. With over 250 steps, broken down into eight working sections, the author ...

An amazing book on Bird Carving

An amazing book on Bird Carving

01-06-2010 09:10 PM by David Craig | 2 comments »

I am rather new to wood carving and power carving in particular. I have a few new dremels and a variety of bits but didn’t really have a good resource for using them. My mother and I share a passion for birds. I have a couple feeders out in my yard and nothing beats the winter doldrums like watching a couple bright red cardinals eating seeds out of them. Learning how to carve them would bring me some joy. I have made a few attempts in the past but one thing that always seem to throw a c...

Good Resource for Creative Box Makers

Good Resource for Creative Box Makers

11-30-2009 10:42 PM by MsDebbieP | 6 comments »

Nov 30/09 If you’ve ever thought, “If you’ve seen one box, you’ve seen them all”, then think again! This book takes boxes to a whole new level. On one hand you have some extraordinary pieces of art in for the form of boxes (and more) and on the other hand it begins by taking you on a journey of man’s evolution and the search for enlightenment. It is said that what makes us human is the ability to envision the possibilities. The craftsmen behind the...

Good Resource for Bowl Turners

Good Resource for Bowl Turners

11-30-2009 08:42 PM by MsDebbieP | 7 comments »

(this review was first posted in the November 2009 eMag) When I picked this book for the book review this month I wasn’t sure what I was going find. I don’t do much on a lathe (pens and mice, actually) and I have never attempted to make a bowl. I wasn’t 100% sure that this was going to be a great book for me. What a pleasant surprise I received! Right from the start the author had my interest – and I mean from the start! The foreword, the behind the book story, w...

Good Resource for Toy Building

Good Resource for Toy Building

11-30-2009 08:38 PM by MsDebbieP | 5 comments »

(this review was first posted in October 2009 eMag) Who doesn’t love a good ol’ wooden toy to play with? Norm Marshall’s book, Great Book of Wooden Toys, provides a variety of plans for a number of vehicles for the air, land, and sea. Also included in the projects are some cute little animals that can be linked together. What I especially enjoyed with this book is the extensive amount of information in the Preface regarding wood selection, safety issue (for the childre...

Good Resource for Country Furniture Building

Good Resource for Country Furniture Building

11-30-2009 08:34 PM by MsDebbieP | 4 comments »

(The projects in this book are from the workshops of David T. Smith and the book is written by Nick Engler and Mary Jane Favorite.) This second of the set of books provided by Fox Chapel Publishing is quite interesting. Not only do you get 50 plans but also a little history on American country furniture, as well as tips regarding wood, hardware and finishing techniques. I really enjoyed reading the information provided about the wood selection and design elements that are used to c...
