Good Resource for Toy Building

Good Resource for Toy Building

1295 days ago by MsDebbieP | 5 comments »

(this review was first posted in the August 2009 eMag) When I first picked up this book I was immediately inspired to make some toys. Each of the 15 projects are now on my “to do” list and I think I can make them all. The step-by-step directions and photos make the process easy to follow and do-able! Although there are almost a dozen pages dedicated to tools and jigs, this book is not about teaching how to use the lathe. It’s about creating vintage toys. Each project i...

Good Resource for Country Furniture Building

Good Resource for Country Furniture Building

(The projects in this book are from the workshops of David T. Smith and the book is written by Nick Engler and Mary Jane Favorite.) This second of the set of books provided by Fox Chapel Publishing is quite interesting. Not only do you get 50 plans but also a little history on American country furniture, as well as tips regarding wood, hardware and finishing techniques. I really enjoyed reading the information provided about the wood selection and design elements that are used to c...

Good Resource for Toy Building

(this review was first posted in October 2009 eMag) Who doesn’t love a good ol’ wooden toy to play with? Norm Marshall’s book, Great Book of Wooden Toys, provides a variety of plans for a number of vehicles for the air, land, and sea. Also included in the projects are some cute little animals that can be linked together. What I especially enjoyed with this book is the extensive amount of information in the Preface regarding wood selection, safety issue (for the childre...

An amazing book on Bird Carving

An amazing book on Bird Carving

1258 days ago by David Craig | 2 comments »

I am rather new to wood carving and power carving in particular. I have a few new dremels and a variety of bits but didn’t really have a good resource for using them. My mother and I share a passion for birds. I have a couple feeders out in my yard and nothing beats the winter doldrums like watching a couple bright red cardinals eating seeds out of them. Learning how to carve them would bring me some joy. I have made a few attempts in the past but one thing that always seem to throw a c...

this review was first posted in our LJ eMag, January 2010 Have you been inspired by the carvers’ projects here at LumberJocks.com, such as the work by Jordan, Mikelknot, and Mark Decou , to name a few? Is “carving a face” on your list of woodworking projects but you just don’t know where to start? Here is a great place to begin—the resource book: “Carving The Human Face”. With over 250 steps, broken down into eight working sections, the author ...

one of my favourite books!

(This review was first posted in the February, 2011 issue of the LumberJocks’ eMag) Fox Chapel Publishing recently sent me another book to review and offer for a free draw: Simply Wood by Roshaan Ganief. At first glance, my thought was, “Wow, this looks like a great book – right up my alley”. The 40 projects included in the book appear to be relatively easy to complete, if only because of the clear directions and photos of the “how to” process. The d...

This book review is from the May-June 2011 issue of our LumberJocks’ eMag Fox Chapel Publishing is donating another book for a free draw! Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning by Doc Green   The tagline for the book “Fixtures and Chucks for Woodturning” says, “Everything you need to know to secure wood on your lathe” and I don’t think that is an exaggeration. What more can there be when you have section headings of: Drive Centers and Live ...

Whittlers and Carvers - Great book!

Whittlers and Carvers - Great book!

This book review is from the June-July 2011 issue of our LumberJocks’ eMag Fox Chapel Publishing is donating another book for a free draw!Whittling Little Folk by Harley Refsal In the informative yet humorous opening to this great little book, the author discusses the difference between whittling and carving. I would interpret his distinction as “a rose by any other name is still a rose”: it’s all about cutting away pieces of wood. The book, “Whittling Little ...
