This is a review of the DVD Bench planes by Jim Kingshott. Jim is a lifelong woodworker who comes from a line of wood workers going back many generations. This video is full of knowledge about how to use hand planes for bench work. The video starts out with Jim fetteling a modern #8 Bailey pattern plane. He explains the operation and adjustment of the plane in detail and sharpens the blade. He then moves on to a wooden jack plane and finally to a Norris Infil plane. He uses the va...

Illustrated Cabinetmaking How to Design and Construct Furniture That WorksBy Bill Hylton Fox Chapel Publishing ISBN: 978-1-56523-369-0 “This book is divided into 4 sections: Fundamentals, Joints, Subassemblies and Furniture. Each section clearly explains and illustrates the section topic well with easily understood terms or readily supplied definitions for new terms. The illustrations and text really do an excellent job of communicating how a particular joint or aspect of furniture work. I...

A Short & Sweet Resource

A Short & Sweet Resource

This book review is from the July 2011 issue of our LumberJocks’ eMag. Fox Chapel Publishing is donating another book for a free draw: The Missing Shop Manual “Bench Planes” by Ernie Conover. At first, I thought about rating this little booklet as a 4-star because I don’t use planes. But, as I started watching the enclosed video and re-looked at the contents, I realized that it definitely had to be a 5-star. If I had a plane I might just have put it to work after being in...

Good Resource for Bowl Turners

(this review was first posted in the November 2009 eMag) When I picked this book for the book review this month I wasn’t sure what I was going find. I don’t do much on a lathe (pens and mice, actually) and I have never attempted to make a bowl. I wasn’t 100% sure that this was going to be a great book for me. What a pleasant surprise I received! Right from the start the author had my interest – and I mean from the start! The foreword, the behind the book story, w...

What the heck does that plane do...

What the heck does that plane do...

I’ve been going through my woodworking videos and rewatching them while I work out on the exercise bike. This one by Jim Kingshott is a wonderful video that takes you through the use of almost every specialty plane you could encounter. This video complements his bench plane video that I reviewed previously. I own most of the handplane related videos on the market other than ones by Rob Cosman. For some reason, I do not own a single video from Rob. I guess have a similar reaction t...

Nov 30/09 If you’ve ever thought, “If you’ve seen one box, you’ve seen them all”, then think again! This book takes boxes to a whole new level. On one hand you have some extraordinary pieces of art in for the form of boxes (and more) and on the other hand it begins by taking you on a journey of man’s evolution and the search for enlightenment. It is said that what makes us human is the ability to envision the possibilities. The craftsmen behind the...

his book review is from the September 2012 issue of our LumberJocks’ eMag Fox Chapel Publishing is donating another book for a free draw! (See below for details)Woodcarver's Workbook At first glance I felt that the book had too much information, too much script and no colour photos which left me feeling “ho hum”... BUT on second look I realized that this book is an excellent resource for learning how to see and how to copy what you see when doing a wood carving. As yo...

Good Resource for Toy Building

Good Resource for Toy Building

1732 days ago by MsDebbieP | 5 comments »

(this review was first posted in the August 2009 eMag) When I first picked up this book I was immediately inspired to make some toys. Each of the 15 projects are now on my “to do” list and I think I can make them all. The step-by-step directions and photos make the process easy to follow and do-able! Although there are almost a dozen pages dedicated to tools and jigs, this book is not about teaching how to use the lathe. It’s about creating vintage toys. Each project i...

Good Resource for Toy Building

(this review was first posted in October 2009 eMag) Who doesn’t love a good ol’ wooden toy to play with? Norm Marshall’s book, Great Book of Wooden Toys, provides a variety of plans for a number of vehicles for the air, land, and sea. Also included in the projects are some cute little animals that can be linked together. What I especially enjoyed with this book is the extensive amount of information in the Preface regarding wood selection, safety issue (for the childre...
