Carver's Spoon Plane from Woodcraft

Carver's Spoon Plane from Woodcraft

05-24-2015 02:09 AM by SouthpawCA | 3 comments »

I purchased Woodcraft’s Carver’s Spoon Plane to clean up the edges on a sculpted chair seat. The first use on black walnut it worked out OK. However, on the 2nd chair seat, maple, the blade broke off. After looking at the construction, you can see in the picture, it appears there is very little metal holding the spoon onto the handle. The metal spoon is very cheap and can actually be bent by hand. It’s not expensive but you get what you pay for. I finished the job wi...

Wonderful Customer Service Experience

Wonderful Customer Service Experience

05-15-2015 09:25 PM by Lenny | 17 comments »

This is just to share a positive customer service experience. I know these days good customer service is often hit or miss. That said, I purchased the shop stool pictured above, over 2 years ago. Recently, while reaching down to pick something up, while still seated, I caused the seat to crack. The chair is rated for about 330 lbs. and while I am well below that weight, I was putting a lot of stress on an edge of the seat as I reached down. I called Woodcraft with the intention of simp...

Cheap Woodcraft Wheel Marking Gauge--It works!

Cheap Woodcraft Wheel Marking Gauge--It works!

Since I have been on my quest to learn to hand cut dovetails, I have been giving my marking gauge a workout. I have been using a Crown Rosewood cutting gauge, and I have been frustrated by my inability to make an absolutely straight clean line every time. I sharpened the knife on it and still would end with a wobble here and there. I thought that the combination of the cutting knife and the very short fence was the culprit: I checked reviews and was about to pull the trigger on a Ham...

Separator for shop vac

Separator for shop vac

02-10-2015 05:07 PM by philba | 4 comments »

This is distributed by Woodcraft. The first picture shows the contents of the box. I bought it to build a sanding vac cart – separator and a small shop vac with a HEPA filter plus an auto switch for the vac. It was on sale for (iirc) $49.95, regular price $79.95. I went to check the price on the Woodcraft web site but it didn’t come up in the search. I know my local store had them as recently as mid January. A label on the side of the box even says “woodcraft”. Not ...

No manual lock, auto brake doesn't work, frustrating to use

No manual lock, auto brake doesn't work, frustrating to use

Woodcraft donated a bunch of these as door prizes to our local woodworking club. The guys passing them out were making fun of them. At first glance it seems like a nice tape measure. It fits the hand well. Looks good for plastic. Has a good rubber grip. The numbers are easy to read and the fractions are clearly marked. The problem is it has no manual lock, instead it has an auto brake so when you pull it out it’s supposed to stay then you press a button to retract. Unfortunately the bra...

Doesn't Ding Like Cast Iron

Doesn't Ding Like Cast Iron

11-05-2014 08:50 PM by OSU55 | 2 comments »

I have the HF 34706 lathe (review here: http://lumberjocks.com/reviews/3720). The tool rest that comes with the lathe is serviceable to get started but became a pita. Mine wasn’t quite level, about an 1/8” difference over its length, and the soft cast iron would ding very easily. The fit of the arm and rest posts into the respective holes were the primary culprit for the misalignment. With the rest mounted directly in the saddle the misalignment was worse due to tapering at the b...

My first review! - Woodcraft preformed sanding pads in multiple profies

This is my first review of anything…ever, so please bear with me. I was refinishing my front door and needed some way to get the three layers of old paint out of all the small, hard to reach places and profiles. “Why not just repaint the door” you’re probably asking yourself? Well it all started with an overly rambunctious teenager driving me nuts one Saturday morning, so for his punishment I told him to scrape all the old paint off the door I have intended to repai...

Review of the Woodcraft Anti Kickback Safety Rollers

Review of the Woodcraft Anti Kickback Safety Rollers

02-11-2014 01:33 PM by steve_in_ohio | 16 comments »

I bought these rollers a couple of days ago because my table saw is old and it doesn’t have a riving knife and I don’t like to use the blade guard. Also I had problems when running long boards thru the table saw that they would try to move away from the fence, so I bought these rollers. I mounted these on my fence with a t-track instead of the rail that it is sold for these. After some simple assembly I started using these and I love them. They hold the wood down to the table and ...

Non Stick Pen Bushings for CA Finishing

Non Stick Pen Bushings for CA Finishing

10-10-2013 02:19 AM by Dick | 1 comment »

Just got these in today and they are awesome! Now I can finish pen sleeves on the lathe and never get glue on the actual metal bushings. You don’t have to worry about damaging the finish when separating the part from the bushing if they get stuck. I’m sure some of you have figured out other alternatives. But, for 7 bucks, these things are well worth the money and turned out to make this process much easier and time efficient. http://www.woodcraft.com/Product/2084563/43430/Hold...
