Yes, I did need a drum sander

Yes, I did need a drum sander

986 days ago by Ben | 18 comments »

Overview When I run across a list of must-have tools in the woodworking magazines, a drum sander is never mentioned. I hemmed and hawed about whether or not I needed one for my growing hobby. I finally bought the Jet 16-32 last December and I am more satisfied with my purchase every day. A few things that were a little bothersome This machine can be slow. I am accustomed to my planer hogging off large chunks of wood in a couple of minutes. This tool is not meant to replace a plane...

"Benny" and Her JET

"Benny" and Her JET

Well, I may need to change my name to “Benny” for this title, but this is my latest addition to the wood workshop as I dearly needed an upgrade from the Craftsman 6” x 36” belt sander which I tend to replace every 18 months (via 2 yr. service contract). The difference between the Craftsman 6” x 36” and the JET 6” x 48” models are like Night vs. Day. Same concept, but the function and quality are on opposite sides of the spectrum. For the pr...

JET 708315BTC 10" Bench top Table Saw

JET 708315BTC 10" Bench top Table Saw

JET 708315BTC 10” Bench top Table SawPrice $250+ When I set off to find a budget and more importantly compact saw, I went through lots of online reviews and ratings. It surprised me that many people pay $200-$300 and expect a professional fine tuned cabinet saw jump right out of the box. Then they give poor rating without even bothering to set riving knife correctly or check blade alignment. I look at it this way: There are things that you can modify, fix or adjust (flimsy fence, ...

Great Idea but Poor Design

Great Idea but Poor Design

I read reviews on this machine on multiple sites before I decided to purchase and came to the conclusion that it would serve me well. I had what I thought to be realistic expectations from this machine. I had expected a machine that would work well for boards up to 5, maybe 6 feet long. I expected it to be under powered, but usable. Many reviews spoke of the difficulty of getting the jointer tables coplanar. I planned on setting the jointer to take a 1/16” cut and leave it there all the...

I removed my review because after using this machine, I can’t say that it is even decent quality. I no longer recommend it. I didn’t want people to buy it on my recommendation.Mitch

Great Machine, Even Better Service

Great Machine, Even Better Service

I bought this machine in July when CPO started running them on sale for $400. I was originally going to get the 8” version, but it wasn’t on sale and with the sale price of the 10” one, it was only $30 less. The 10” one comes with a stand, so even with the extra $30 you are probably paying the same. Anyway, I set it up at home as soon as I got it (first picture) and brought it to my cabin later that week. Upon the first start up, it made a rumbling noise when it shut d...

Jet 12" Jointer - Planer

Jet 12" Jointer - Planer

I am pleasantly surprised at the construction and thoughtful design of this machine. It came in an extremely will built crate and it was perfectly adjusted right out of the crate. The 3HP, 220V motor showed no sign of being under powered when planing and jointing the 100 bd ft of quarter-shawn white oak I had to run. I really like the high fence for jointing and I had no problem putting a straight edge on 8’ and 9’ boards. I felt the 55” tables were not too short to do this ...

Good Video for Beginners

Good Video for Beginners

Recently bought this DVD at Woodworkers Source to help me improve my jointing and planing skills. There are a lot of helpful tips on the video. My favorite is how to mill out cupped, bowed, crooked and twisted boards. If your learning how to use a jointer and/or a planer this will be a helpful tool to have in your arsenal of knowledge. There are other DVD’s in this series that are for the tablesaw, bandsaw, lathe, and shaper. Good deal for $20.

Very capable table saw

Very capable table saw

My two expert woodworking friends scoffed at any thoughts that I’d buy less than a table saw that I’d be happy with for a long long time. When I suggested this saw they both endorsed the idea. It’s been great. I will add that I’ve invested in the Forrest Woodworker II blade. The cuts are really good, and from a beginner. And I’ve done some pretty complicated work creating a maple corner cabinet with various mitered joints, dado groves and other finer feature...

This sander gets the job done!

This sander gets the job done!

Apprehensive at first spending so much on a sander, my fears we relieved after the first board was run through. The packaging was excellent, isn’t styrofoam wonderful? The base was easy to assemble with good instructions (pictures) provided. Be advised, get some help to lift the sanding machine on the stand!!!! It is heavy !!!! The in-feed table was easy to install, along with the optional extensions. Tracking was perfect after loosening the shipping tension right out of the box. So far...
