Butler Tray Hinges

Butler Tray Hinges

I decided to write up this review after finding little or no information regarding their use and also their installation. Background I purchased the hinges from a Creative finishes for Hardware supplier located in Dungog N.S.W. Australia. Butler style hinges all appear to be in the ormanental catagory and are mostly brass or polished Stainless Steel. The profile is overall rectangular and the ends can be square edge or rounded. The hinges I used were solid brass polished to a high ...

Poor Communication

Poor Communication

719 days ago by Bertha | 30 comments »

I ordered two woodscrews and two garters on April 3, 2012 for $320.00. I sent a total of 8 messages to check on the status of my order. I said, “I’m not asking for the World, just a bit of communication” (both on the site form and via e-mail). Without a single word, my payment was refunded on April 25, 2012. The credit hasn’t posted yet but I have every reason to believe it will. The right thing to do would have been to simply tell me he couldn’t fill the order. ...

Onsrud 12 tooth 8" Dado set

Onsrud 12 tooth 8" Dado set

904 days ago by Dallas | 1 comment »

I bought this set, mostly on a whim, since my BT3100 isn’t really built for 8” dado blades. Nevertheless, being addicted to eBay as I am, I was looking at different Dado sets and found this one to be inexpensive, but with my experience with another Onsrud blade thought I would take a chance. When I received the blade set, in a nice wooden box, I just had to try it. I have lately been trying to make some box joints in Chinaberry wood, which is really brittle. My usual method is ...

New Plane User's Required Reading

New Plane User's Required Reading

1030 days ago by Manitario | 8 comments »

The first plane that I bought was a $25 big box store special block plane, that I thought might be useful to trim the edges of some boards that I trimming my basement with. Out of the box it did nothing more than gouge and tear the wood, and quickly was assigned a place of dishonour in my shop. That was a year and a half ago. Since then, I’ve learnt a little bit more about planes, and managed to tune it to produce some nice curly shavings from it after a lot of sole flattening and blade sharp...

The Best Woodworking Book I've Seen

The Best Woodworking Book I've Seen

1032 days ago by BentheViking | 10 comments »

This is basically a woodworking text book, but I’ve read it cover to cover. First of all the book is huge. First half is introductions to everything about woodworking—tooling, wood species, joinery, finishing, designing projects, setting up a shop. It doesn’t go into anything with so much depth that you will be a master at it, but is great as a general reference and a must for anyone setting out in the woodworking field. The second part (as the title references) has...

The New Traditional Woodworker

The New Traditional Woodworker

I fancy myself as a hand tool woodworker until I start to sweat. Theorizing and reading are much more friendly to the knuckles. Lots of tools techniques and individual shop projects in this book. I’m guessing if you work your way through the projects you’ll emerge on the other side as a good hand tool neanderthal. Cool projects consist of straight edge, winding sticks, several types of bench hooks, etc. Only lacking a mock up of the tower of babel. I’ll talk to Jim lat...

Wonderful Hand Made Bowsaw available from Ebay Stores

Wonderful Hand Made Bowsaw available from Ebay Stores

1126 days ago by Bertha | 16 comments »

About a week ago, a fellow Lumberjock (Loren) directed me to a handmade bowsaw available on Ebay Stores. http://myworld.ebay.com/cmehandworksinc I ordered the 14” maple variety for $62.00 including shipping, which I thought was quite reasonable. It arrived well-package, disassembled in a long shipping tube, and came with detailed re-assembly instructions. I found the unfinished bow to be of excellent craftsmanship and the pieces fit with high tolerance. It is an ...

best deal for a remote dust collector switch

best deal for a remote dust collector switch

1134 days ago by drewnahant | 17 comments »

I was going to buy a longranger for my dust collector, but I decided to look around for alternatives, and I found this. four outlet switches with two remotes for half the price of a single longranger, how could I go wrong? The two big green outlets are rated for 15 Amps, and the two white ones are only rated for 10 Amps. my 1hp dust collector is rated at 6 Amps, so I tried one of white ones, and the startup surge popped an internal fuse, I shorted the fuse, and it works fine, doesnt seem t...

Hardwood Supplier: Forest Products Associates. Greenfield, MA

Hardwood Supplier: Forest Products Associates. Greenfield, MA

1190 days ago by thiel | 9 comments »

NOTE:—Photos and Videos at the Bottom... scroll down!— Where I used to live, there was a so called “incredible” hardwood supplier who had a showroom of almost 800 square feet in which to display oak, cherry, poplar, and walnut. Occasionally, they’d get some additional “special” species. Oh, and EVERYTHING was S2S. Boy was I clueless! When I moved to my current town two years ago, I had a heckuva time locating a hardwood dealer. I searched on...
