Both lie-Nielsen(picture 1&2) and Lee Valley(picture 3) sell auriou’s rasps. I bought one from each company just to see what the difference is between the handles those companies provide with the rasps. While both handles are comfortable, the maple handle from Lie-Nielsen is a joy to hold. I didn’t think there would be much of a difference, but the handles from Lee Valley don’t have quite the same level of fit and finish and they are a little more tiring to use. Lie-Ni...

If it’s possible to get excited about a simple and ancient tool, these little handmade French cabinet files have me giddy. Generally, files are nothing to get too thrilled about—but the quality of these files is exceptional from the moment you pick one up. Having followed late last year it was noted with great sadness that this company had closed it doors. It supposedly made the greatest rasps for woodworkers in the world. Each one is handcrafted by an artisan in France who had to train for 3 years to until they are allowed to forge, heat treat and hand stitch a rasp whose teeth are cut very regular, but always spaced a bit little off with each tooth cutting a slightly different path than its predecessor.
