Great value in a contractor saw

Great value in a contractor saw

11-02-2009 04:11 AM by Glenn | 43 comments »

I’ve been using an early 1980s-era Craftsman 9-inch portable table saw with a steel table and stamped steel extension wings. After deciding that I needed something a little more precise than this older saw, I was looking to upgrade and was attracted to the Bosch 4100-09 partly because of the reviews, but mostly because of the blade guard/riving knife it features. I wasn’t really wanting another portable saw, however, and was looking for something beefier instead. I discovered this...

radial arm saw

radial arm saw

I have read a few reviews and topics about how dangerous radial arm saws are and that now days they have out lived their purpose in wood working. This is something I just don’t get as this was the second tool I purchased for my shop (like new, second hand for $250) and has been one of the best tools and one of my favorites since I brought it home. They are like any tool in your shop dangerous and reading the owners manual twice on this tool is a must. They have a tendency to produce kic...

Craftsman Professional Palm Router

Craftsman Professional Palm Router

I had been searching for a new lighter router for easy handling and finer work. The Craftsman Professional palm router was my second pick over the Bosch, but after having the Bosch for an hour I packed it back up and returned it (I will save that for another review) and picked up the Craftsman. First thought out of the box was it felt good in my hand, comfort was great. The tool was solid but not too heavy. This was my first “soft start” router and although I have read some guy...

Craftsman Bandsaw Fence - good bang for the buck

Craftsman Bandsaw Fence - good bang for the buck

I spotted this while wandering through Sears the other day, and since my little 10” benchtop bandsaw doesn’t have a fence, and I plan picking up the Porter Cable 14” that Lowes has (which I know does not come with a fence) I figured for $40, this universal fence (which boldly claims to fit all models of bandsaws) would be a good investment (Being a hobbyist and “weekend woodworker” I don’t need the hyper-accuracy and features of one of the $150+ models̷...

Craftsman 22116 Premium Hybrid Tablesaw

Craftsman 22116 Premium Hybrid Tablesaw

I’ve only had this saw 3 1/2 months but I think I can give a good review. I have to start by saying I did not shop for a new saw. I had a 7 year old Craftsman21140 that Sear’s techs basically ruined, & this is a replacement, but I had to pay $250. out of pocket. You could see that on my ” How I wound up with….” forum post. I really have nothing to compare this saw to, but the 21140. This is a significant upgrade. I really liked the 21140. Doesn’t look t...

Nice Palm Router

Nice Palm Router

06-21-2010 08:57 AM by Bob Kollman | 8 comments »

About a year and a half ago I bought this router for 37.00 scratch and dent at sears. This router is missing some of the features you’d find on the bosch, but for the majority of my work this particular model meets my needs. Mostly I use it for flush and trim cuts, I do lots of cuts on the band saw using templets, leaving enough materialfor this router to trim the remains. This router gets warm fast, but I have run this router for long periods with out burnout. This router is also grea...

Very nice palm router with one annoying flaw

Very nice palm router with one annoying flaw

I’ve had this router for nearly two years now, so feel I can give a good review based on actual usage. When looking for a small router to do light tasks, I purchased this one because of the price ($89.99 everyday, purchased on sale for $79.99) and I thought the included larger sub-base with the handles looked like a good idea. It has been used quite a bit and overall has been a good investment. The Good: Soft start. I’ve heard of people not liking soft start motors, bu...

Small circular saw for lightweight work

Small circular saw for lightweight work

I have a Skil Mag-77 worm-drive saw for heavy-duty cutting. It is a bit elephantine for smaller-scale work, so I recently purchased this Craftsman 5.5-inch trim saw to fill out my saw collection. While listed as a Craftsman Professional tool, and while the build quality is terrific, it still seems a tad lightweight to be considered a pro-class tool. The motor on this small saw is an 8-amp job, the rotational speed is 4,000 rpm, the cutting depth at 90 degrees is 1 5/8 inches (just enough f...

Nice but pricey, really a DeWalt at heart

Nice but pricey, really a DeWalt at heart

07-21-2009 01:49 AM by jake | 2 comments »

As we all know, Craftsman is a private label and Sears makes none of the line. This unit is actually a DeWalt at heart, with minor changes like the handle. While I believe I like the more traditional handle of other brands the knob works fine and is easy to get used to . While I think a handle on the front of the machine would add stability, most are configured like the Craftsman/DeWalt being on the body of the motor and gearcase.Pro’s: It’s very well built, heavy duty is an under...

Craftsman 10" SCMS....A DO NOT buy

Craftsman 10" SCMS....A DO NOT buy

09-25-2009 05:22 AM by MedicKen | 18 comments »

I purchased this saw brand new a couple of years ago. I wanted to give it a good run before doing a review. My first overall impression when I was looking for a saw was this would fit the bill and work nicely for my needs. I looked at some of the major brands when I decided I need a SCMS. My first choice was Bosch, but the price drove me away. Then I went to DeWalt but I couldnt find the model I wanted locally and I wasnt gonna pay for shipping. So I guess I kinda settled on this one. I sh...
