Harbor Freight 13" DP (Model 38142)

Harbor Freight 13" DP (Model 38142)

03-14-2009 02:51 PM by knotscott | 8 comments »

This 13” DP is a far cry from my most prestigious tool, and Harbor Freight’s “Central Machinery” brand doesn’t typically conjure up tons of confidence and the obligatory “Tim the tool man Taylor” grunts that the big names will, but this particular purchase has been too good to not give the credit that’s due. The 38142 is a 13”, 16 speed, 3/4 hp benchtop drill press. It weighs in at a respectable 125#, and stands over 40” tall. It ...

Does what it's supposed to do at a good cost

Does what it's supposed to do at a good cost

Pros-strongest drill press I’ve ever had. Strong enough for what I do-lots of speed settings-plenty of chuck travel-haven’t measured run-out but I couldn’t noticeably see any with the largest forstner bit I have. Cons-not sure if it’s considered a con but it’s super tall for a benchtop model. -overly soaked in shipping grease but mineral spirits will take care of that-circle table. Why do all drill presses come with a circle table??!! Not a huge deal as I made...

Central Machinery 14” 4 Speed Band saw

Central Machinery 14” 4 Speed Band saw

Review: Central Machinery 14” 4 Speed Band saw This is a preliminary review of the saw that I got today from HF. Price: $360.00Speeds: 600, 1140, 1670, and 2670 Feet Per MinuteWeight: 179 lbs This is a first for me, buying not only my first bandsaw, but also buying one without thorough reading of reviews. I toyed with this saw at the store, I had to straighten out the whole thing before I could see it work, the blade was in backwards, and the saw was completely out of adjustment. Funny,...

Do not buy at this time, manufacturing error

Do not buy at this time, manufacturing error

I recently bought one of these, returned it, and now am about to return the replacement. The unit comes with a mounting platform and casters. They must have recently changed caster manufacturers as the new ones do not line up with the pre-drilled holes in the metal platform. Both units I got had this exact problem. If you want to use your own platform or drill new holes yourself, this still could be a usable system. Just an FYI. I would recommend opening the small box the caster...

Harbor Freight / Central Machinery Oscillating Spindle Sander

Harbor Freight / Central Machinery Oscillating Spindle Sander

04-19-2010 04:50 AM by FJPetruso | 41 comments »

I recently purchased a new Oscillating Spindle Sander for my small woodworking shop. Before making the purchase I checked out comparable models, The Harbor Freight Oscillating Spindle Sander & the Triton Oscillating Spindle Sander. For the type of use that I give a power tool this quality sander would work well. With the exception of the colors being reversed, the two machines are identicle. Both sanders have the same features & acessories. Naturally at $90 for the Harbor freight m...

Very good inexpensive 12" disc sander on sale

Very good inexpensive 12" disc sander on sale

09-03-2010 12:39 PM by Toolz | 10 comments »

I reviewed this online and purchased it at my local Harbor Freight yesterday. I cut splines a little proud when making boxes and this sander is ideal for sanding the sides of the boxes smooth before moving on to a ROS and finish sanders. I set it up and used it on two boxes yesterday and it was a good price vs. utility decision. The original price was $129.99 on sale for $119.99 and with a 20 o/o coupon final price was $ 95.99 before taxes. I would give it 4 1/2 stars rather than 5 because t...

Harbor Freight Mobile Base with instructions

Harbor Freight Mobile Base with instructions

02-25-2012 05:02 AM by justholler | 10 comments »

As with many of the other posts on this item, the instructions were a sticking point. I found out just what that meant and this assembly took waaaaayyyy too long! Fortunately I was building it for a small Grizzly band saw so I used pine instead of hardwood. Had I used stock that was in short supply, I would have been further frustrated. The main issue is the instructions say nothing about where the wood pieces should stop in the frame. Once you start without the experience, you will be...

Best Jointer I have ever used.

Best Jointer I have ever used.

11-26-2010 07:50 PM by therookie | 7 comments »

Now this jointer is the best jointer I have ever used, but is also my first. But that is besides the point, the point is the jointer is very quiet and pretty accurate. When is first arrived, I pulled it out of the crate and started assembling it. I went for the manual and started to read about assembly and found out that it went faster figuring out how to asseble it on my own rather than following the directions. Accuracy right out of the crate is OK for getting stuff within a 1/32 of an inch...

Good Jointer for the Price

Good Jointer for the Price

10-13-2012 02:26 AM by ErikF | 34 comments »

I needed to upgrade from by benchtop jointer to a stationary unit so I purchased this jointer last week at my local Harbor Freight. I have had some good luck with their power tools and read some good reviews about this specific jointer. The setup took some work due to the terrible owners manual that comes in the box…it has about 6 random pictures along with a few pages of text only instructions. I had to change a few pieces around as I went but managed to get it assembled in a couple ho...

Decent Sander for the Price (using Coupon)

Decent Sander for the Price (using Coupon)

01-14-2011 10:47 PM by Denappy | 15 comments »

Found a Harbor Freight coupon for this in the latest issue of Wood Magazine for $49.95 (lists for $99.99), so I thought I would run down to my local Harbor Freight and check out the “floor model”. After looking it over I decided to go ahead and make the purchase. It unpacked easily and was a breeze to setup. Basically just have to attached the table. For the most part this is a pretty decent machine for the price, good cast iron parts except for the table and the disk; which ...
