In Search of a Plumb Cut

In Search of a Plumb Cut

2239 days ago by deadhead | 6 comments »

I recently had a couple of projects that required some curve cuts in both 4/4 oak and 8 ft. 2×12 pine. I don’t own a bandsaw ( bandsaws, horses, and teen agers all make me nervous) no problem , I had my trusty Skil jigsaw.Forget it! What was supposed to be a perfectly plumb 90 degree cut ended up as a 45 degree edge. I think the blade was trying to run away from the wood. So…, off to Home Depot. I was mentally prepared to spend a few bucks and get the best jigsaw available. I...

Great Shop Vac

Great Shop Vac

I bought this as a bundle with my Domino. Previously I used a Craftsman ShopVac that was powerful but incredibly loud. Excruciatingly loud. The CT22 comes assembled other than a little cord hanger that must be screwed on. It comes with a vac hose to fit Festool Tools. A variety of connectors are available. Cool FeaturesVariable suction control.Built in tool plug for automatic start when the tool is turned on.HEPA filters. Dust free bag change. There was ZERO dust in the case when I chan...

6" Rotary and Orbital Festool RO 150 Sander

6" Rotary and Orbital Festool RO 150 Sander

I just bought Festool’s new 6” sander and it is truly everything as advertised. This is my first foray into Festool so I bought the package with the CT 33E dust extractor. Their dust extractors have been reviewed already on LJ so I will try to stay away from the extractor and focus on the tool. That being said, I a lot of my 5 star rating is influenced by the phenomenal dust extraction. Anybody who has done even 1 minute of sanding knows that the dust is what makes it so terri...

If you were only going to own one sander, this is it!

Over the last couple of months both my palm sander and ROS have bit the dust; of course they were about 8 or nine years old. I received this as a fathers day gift and boy am I glad I did. I decided to try out the claims I’ve heard regarding the efficient dust collection and life of the paper, not to mention the speed that it smooths a rough surface. A couple of months back I picked up a Big Leaf Maple slab and had done nothing with it; You can see the rough saw marks in the first pi...

Festool - tools that make me smile

Festool - tools that make me smile

I’m a firm believer in the “get what you pay for” adage. I bought the Festool sanders and dust extracter a couple of years ago when I was bidding a project to refinish some tabletops inside a restaurant. When I realized the veneer was too thin to refinish, I persuaded the owner to simply have new tops made. I’ve since used the Festool sanders for a variety of projects and really like the way they perform. I’m all for minimizing the dust I’m likely to suc...

Excellent Drill/Driver

Excellent Drill/Driver

2238 days ago by Chris | 9 comments »

This drill was Christmas gift from my wife this past year. My previous cordless had given up the ghost back in November and I had been grousing about have to use the corded drill all the time. We debated about the merits of 14v vs. 18v vs. 12v? for a while when I told her to pick what we could afford in the budget. I will admit I had my reservation with regards to a 12v drill; I don’t have them any longer. The drill comes with the case (systainer), charger, two batteries, Centrotec ...

Bigger isn't always better.

I have 8 routers and this one is my favorite. I will confess that several of my routers are older orhave limited features and I’ll just leave them set up withthe same bit for a long time. Having a lot of routerslets you do that. An old Craftsman from a garagesale never got used for anything but trimming edge-banding. This Festool router is lightweight and it is easy to usewith one hand. It has variable speed, excellent dust collection and smooth plunging action. The plungedept...

Festool MFT/3 Multifunction Table

Festool MFT/3 Multifunction Table

This is the Festool Multi Function Table. This was my big surprise Christmas present from my wife last year. She surprised me big time with this one and I think I surprised her very well by putting it together as soon as I got it through the front door. She was lucky that it didn’t become a permanent fixture in our living room. But after she finally convinced me I didn’t need to keep it in the living room, I folded it back up and got it to my basement shop. The MFT/3 measur...

Best Circular Saw I have ever used....

Best Circular Saw I have ever used....

1417 days ago by Chris | 18 comments »

We purchased the TS 75 Plunge Saw a few months ago after another regular circular saw fried on me again. I am not a contractor or a woodworking professional; but, I do expect things to work for more than a couple of years. I chose the TS 75 after being fortunate enough to use a friends TS 55 to rough out the pieces for a couple of book cases. Power:The 75 has plenty of power to cut my sheet goods and rough lumber to usable dimensions with lots to spare. Accuracy:With the included tra...

Good Vibes are NO Vibes!

Good Vibes are NO Vibes!

I have a medium sized female hand and I’ve been told I have Carpel Tunnel Syndrome in my right hand but I’m not ready for surgery. I don’t want to be out of commission that long and the pain is not constant or severe. I’ve been using a 5” 4.8 lb. weight Ryobi and also an old Porter Cable and they both vibrate the heck out of my hand even with using two special shock absorbing gloves. I hold the sander with one hand to move around my cane handles and shafts s...
