I have leather via contact cement on the faces and backs of both vises on my bench, if that makes any difference to your thought process. I think it helps hold work and provides just a bit of protection as well to the pieces being held.

Thanks Smitty and sorry for the delay in my reply (life!). I will be affixing the cork/rubber via contact cement as well. Hopefully next weekend.
