That sucks. Hopefully he will replace it.

Wow, 3/32” is a huge error. The problem has to be in the base of the slot in the head, since that’s what the rule registers against. Do you see a gap on either side between the ruler and the head? If so, remove the head and check it with a strong light to see if there is anything lodged in there, or a flaw in the casting. If there’s no gap and it’s that far off, the head was just milled improperly.

I have three PEC squares and they are all right on the money. None are seconds though.

Please let us know how they handle it. I’ve never ordered from that company, but if they screw you over, I won’t deal with them under any circumstances.

Very disappointed. Am going to attempt to return it. Wonder how that will go, it being a factory second?

- Renaissance_Man

My guess is that you will have no problem returning it. For one thing, the “second” status refers only to the cosmetic condition of the tool—not its fitness for a particular task.
Secondly, there’s this right on their site:
===============================================
Returns & Replacements

We are reasonable people. We assume you are a reasonable person to. Together, if something should go awry, we will be able to work it out between us. If it was our fault, we will make it good. If you accidentally ordered the wrong thing, we will take it back and give you a refund for the product that is returned to us.

Harry Epstein reduced my shipping costs without my asking.

They’ll make good on it.

If the square is out that much, it is worthless and should not even be sold as a “second”. A few thous out would be acceptable, but not 3/32.

I ordered a try square from them, it was supposed to look like this:

What I got was a square made with chinese plywood that was split.

Combo squares are super easy to true up…

All you need is a file and blue tape.

If it wasn’t a blem, I’d send it back, but…

A neighbor bought one and it was very blurred for the increments. Contacted them and they sent him another very quickly. He was very impressed by the Customer service. Contact them and see what they do. Like you I have a box store one, it works and I use it. My Dad gave me a Starrett for my birthday. Both work and do the job they have in life. The Starrett though is far superior. That said that comes at a price. Thanks Dad!!!

Was contacted by Steve Sackin from Harry Epstein. They sent me a new handle for the square, no questions asked. In looking down in the slot that holds the blade, one of the lands at the bottom was all but non-existent. The new handle fixed the issue and the square is now perectly square.

So yes, defective item, but excellent customer service.

Would you order from them again? After seeing what Clammy ordered and what he actually received really has given me pause from ordering from them. I was actually looking for a couple different pieces from them but getting something that’s not even close to what the photo on the website has makes me want to pass on them.

I’ve ordered several times from them. Only one or two issues. Always quickly resolved to my satisfaction. The PEC squares are excellent value

A quick unknown…in your order of you comment that you’d like it…someone at the company will paint/draw on your packaging. Always a nice surprise.

Glad to hear they quickly resolved your issue. I’ve placed a couple orders from them and always had great service. And my PEC combo square is still my go to square.

I recently picked up a couple of their machinist squares in 2 and 3” sizes. I believe they are made in india, but very handy for machine tune ups.

Glad (but not surprised) to see that they took care of you in a timely manner.

FWIW, I have 3 PEC second squares, two from HJE, one from TTW, and all have been dead on and are excellent tools.

Also FWIW, if I were to do it again, I’d probably go the same seconds route with the smaller (4” & 6”) squares, but I would go with a first on the 12” – maybe it was just my particular 12” blade, but the scallops to grind off the name/logo are a little deep and unsightly (on the smaller blades they’re pretty pretty light). I know that it doesn’t impact the function of the tool, but pretty is better than not pretty, and the extra 30 bucks or whatever would be worth it to me.

Yeah, I think I would. I’m kinda lusting after one of the smaller combo squares.

Have your say...
