The topcoat is more important than the stain, since it will be what is in contact with food. According to experts like Bob Flexner, any topcoat is food safe once it has cured. I assume it will be used just as a countertop, and any cutting will be done on a chopping block on top of it to protect it.

My dentist says that red wine and coffee have stained my teeth but good. They should both be food safe.

Seriously, you can use coffee to stain wood. I haven’t done so myself, so I do not know how permanent the color is when exposed to thing like UV light or heat. Google it and you will get a zillion hits.

Rich is right that the topcoat is the most important concern. Still, I would read the MSDS for any stain or dye before using it to avoid any that contain heavy metals.

Monocoat is veggie based, 100% VOC free and is all the rage in butcherblock counter tops now.

Thanks guys for info. The home owner heard about the coffee thing so going to try that on a piece that we cut off and c how turns out
