What happened to my sander ?

Why not just try it out on a piece of scrap? You have nothing to lose. Especially if you’re afraid to use it as is.

Just have somebody else with their hand on the plug. In case it gets away from you, they can quickly unplug it. Or use a switched power strip. Good luck.

Carloz,

I use Porter Cable Random Orbital sanders and have experienced a similar problem. I found that the synthetic band that wraps around the main spindle and the small idler pulley was broken. Replacing it fixed the problem. This synthetic band is accessed on the Porter Cable by removing the pad on which sanding disks are mounted.

Yep, I also have a PC orbital. The band that slows the rotation breaks every few years, you can spend the bucks for a ‘real’ part or $0.50 for the properly dimensioned “O” ring. “O” rings work just as well in my opinion.

Same here. My Porter Cable did the same thing. I replaced the little belt and it works fine. The belt runs the “random orbit” feature.
