I don’t see the purpose of the top viewed projects. I feel that there are many missed projects if someone just looks at the home page. To me it just and “ego feeder”.

I feel the same way because the only people that post on my projects are my buddies. So many more people would benefit from seeing the projects if they were posted like they used to be.

As I understand it, the Top 15 and Top 3 are based on a combination of the number of views, comments and times the project is marked as a favorite. I don’t think the exact formula has been made public knowledge.

My second project posted made it to the top three, and a couple others to the top 15. I don’t think it is anything underhanded. The projects most likely to make it to the top seem to be workshop projects or jigs, followed by large furniture pieces.

As I recall, the current setup came about, at least in part, because of complaints about people who would post several projects all at once, usually of small items that could have been in a single post, which would push more popular types of projects off the front page. (Not saying I agree, but that is what I remember seeing back at that time).

I fully agree with you, Rustic, and I’m one of those guys whose projects almost always make it to the top three.

I’ve been on the site for a long time, and have lots of “buddies” who get notified when I post a project. Naturally, that means my projects get a lot of views, and that propels them into that daily top three category. It’s not really fair, and it is definitely not because my work is that good.

I much preferred the old way where you just saw the most recently-posted projects when you opened the home page.

I really havent been on here that long but I have had several projects in the top 3. I always thought it was just based on the # of views that a particular project got. Anyway, I just do the best I can and whatever happens happens.

As Ls2000 said, it’s a combination of those factors, where the number of people selecting a project as a “favorite” gets the most weight. The exact metric is not public knowledge. But you will see many projects at the top that have innovative designs and techniques…because people like me will often choose those as favorites, not so much because we want to build one like it, but rather because there’s a gimmick or technique that we want to remember to incorporate in our own projects. Many such projects are really fleshed out in the descriptions and are quite instructional…so my advice, other than making buddies (which isn’t a bad thing), is to do something in your project posts beyond just saying, “Hey, looky what I did!” Make them instructional or useful to others (kinda bloggy) and you might get more attention.

But I concur with you…I don’t like the methodology, and this is coming from a guy who hit the top spot a couple of weeks ago. I often will go directly to the projects page to see everything because some really good stuff gets missed, but I forget to do it sometimes.

yes, that is correct: “it’s a combination of those factors, where the number of people selecting a project as a “favorite” gets the most weight.”

”I often will go directly to the projects page”

Maybe I missed the answer to this, but I’ve seen it mentioned it several times. Where do you click to go “directly to the projects page” ?

Thx

or at the bottom of every ‘pulse’
either works

for page re-fresh
(after reading a long post)
i go to ‘who’s online’
it gives you a new fresh pulse

I think it is rigged and some really weak projects seem to win…maybe I am bitter because I can’t get a project to place…but from what I see strip cut cutting boards winning? it has nothing to do with craftsmanship and everything to do with popularity…bitter…lol

I am sorry but this stuff bothers me…I bet that you can create multiple profiles and add your project to your fake favorites and propel your junk to the top…so there is multiple way to cheat this system…I would rather see nothing than these losers cheating there are classic example right now….

Another point to consider: As MsDebbie said, heavy weight is given to the number of times a project is favorited. This gives a big advantage to jigs and fixtures, because people tend to “favorite” projects they would like to copy at some point for their own use. So a simple but useful jig has a better shot at making the top 3 than a really good artistic woodworking project.

I know I can always click on the projects page if I want. But the simple truth of the matter is that ever since they switched to the top 15 format for the home page, I don’t look at nearly as many projects as I used to.

I aggre with all you say…my logic say there has to be a better way…how about breaking us into groups maybe crafts, turned, cabnets, jigs and fixtures, misc…...there are some underhanded stuff going on as well it was my job I know details and patterns and can smell a skunk, the whole reason I posted weed pot was being smug to the project right before it….my first…bs oops and now weed pot is almost a winner it only proves that games win not art…..my other work is way better and it never got so high in rating….funny how other guys attacked me on weed pot….why?...lol easy stuff…so games win over talent do I dare take on editors choice to? I see fake on that as well…this sucks

I have to weigh in on this one after watching it for a while. I have more than my share of Top 3s for some unknown reason BUT I really don’t post projects with competition in mind. I see this site as a place to share ideas, ask question, and learn from my fellow woodworkers. It is by far the best woodworking site and pretty much everything I know about woodworking, I learned from the wonderful folks on this site.

I am not on here for the same reasons as you? Can’t this site be for other type people? You really think cutting a u and putting a screw into it is a top project? Or am I missing something, on the current page to me the only really deserving one is the white oak mission style dresser….that took talent…and I wrote him and told him so….glad you learn from this site…I did not start this thread…but I see the problems and have experienced them…

If a lot of it has to do with being ‘favorited’ then I think it’s a misnomer. I don’t know about other people but I usually favorite projects if it’s something I’d like to catalog because I have something similar in mind to build someday. I never have favorited a project as a vote of approval.

I didn’t realize that it was a competition, or required winning…and I highly doubt people create multiple accounts to up their position on the top 15. People have to have better things to do, like say…WOODWORKING??
