I looked and your other post said what kind of lathe it is.

Look at the parts diagram on the manual: http://www.rikontools.com/manuals/70200evs.pdf

Most likely the part in problem is the retaining clip labled part 60 or alternatively, you could have also just unthreaded the screw from the quill while overextended. Push the quill all the way back in the tailstock and see if the screw will thread in again.

Either way, lathes are pretty simple machines and the parts should not be too expensive if broken.

oh shit it is a jet jl1236 sorry i should have said this already i am sure there is a clip or something in it but i dont see here it goes or what it is

I don’t know what to tell you about the missing part, but something I just started doing (due to my own crappy drive spur) that has yielded great results is to take off the drive spur, whack it into the end just until the spurs make a mark. then use a chisel (1/4” in my case) and make deeper indentations. Then put the drive spur back on, mount the piece so that the drive spur is in the now deeper slots, then advance the tailstock. This greatly reduces the amount of force you have to put on the tailstock to attempt to get the drive spur in deeper. Worked great for me, solved most of my issues with turning fine spindles.

I had the same problem on my 1236. There’s a C clip inside the tailstock that rides up onto the threads if you overtighten. E.g., using the tail to seat your drive spur into the wood.

Just remove the tail’s handwheel and the entire assembly can be pulled out. Pit the C clip back into the groove behind the threads and your problem is resolved.

THE parts website calls it an e clip they wanted 3 bucks plus 6 dollars for shipping so i went to lowes and got a bag of them for 2 dollars the clip lasted one turn and popped off. so i went to Fresno Ag a really huge hardware store across town and they had metric hardened clips for 50 cents each they were way harder and 3 times as thick as the lOWES E CLIP I put it on and went back to work. Mind you I have had this lathe like 8-10 years and never a complaint it has always worked great. so i went back to turning when suddenly a poof came from the motor and a smell of something burning i watched it close but finished turning the piece and then i turned off the Lathe now it wont start up at all

i trouble shot the switch it tests good so i went to the motor and call a friend at the electric motor shop they said they would test it for free but that these motors hardly ever go bad and that it was likely a capacitor an 8 dollar part but it has to be soldered on and the joint is huge the want 40 dollars to install the new capacitor and to solder it in an test the motor again to be sure it is good so i said lets do it I will get it back tomorrow no telling what the third issue on the lathe is going to be I just hope no one gets hurt when the next thing breaks.

I am not sure but I think Harbor Freight sells the same lathe for about $200. Like I said I am not sure. I got that impression from something I read….probably on LJ. I would check it out. Also I am one that believes if it looks the same and comes out of the same factory door it still might not be the same. I was looking for a leg set for my Jet 1236. They wanted almost $100 each for the legs!! I will go for the HF set for $40. Maybe you can mix and match some parts fro HF with your Jet??

I think to say they are the same is a wish buy people on a budget. true it is a copy of the design but the motor and drive are not the same. they aren’t even made in the same plant . I think the legs might be made to work might have to drill a few holes. My motor was ready today the part ended up costing me 14 dollars and the labor was 40 so not to bad Ill put it back together tomorrow.

Was it just the capacitor? If so, you could have put that on… It’s a very common failure on the Jet 1014. I replaced one on mine, and one on friend’s lathe. Now that I think about it, I even had a third one fail on me at a show this summer on another friends lathe.

yes it was but the fittings on the replacement one was not the same so ems soldered it together with their monster solder iron I could have bought the right kind of solder and tried to do it with a torch but they guarantee the work and the part for 1 year so i took the deal and had them install it.

Not a bad fix or price. I know the HF lathes has slightly different legs. The Jet has the switch in the left front leg (at least mine does) and I thought I could adapt the HF leg to make it work. I was gifted with this Jet 1236WL. Unfortunately the legs were cut off and some castors were added. The engineering on that job was not too good. that is what you get when an IRS agent does the work….LOL. He is still a great man and a good uncle so I acceppted his lathe along with a trailer load of stuff. I can deal with it. Glad to see you got your machine operating.

it may work tomorrow I have to get some help mounting the motor I have a bad case of tennis elbow and cant hold the motor in one hand like when i was young.

be careful with that elbow. My son is recovering from surgery on the tendon in his elbow. The doc says tendons don’t heal well because there is no blood flow to them. He said he could take some red cells and inject them and there was a 50/50 chance it would stop the pain. unfortunately the insurance won’t cover that proceedure because it is not approved yet. The surgery is only 75% to completely stop the pain. 20% have some pain for life and 5% said they couldn’t tell they had surgery. I had a pain like that and took manganese. 10 mg per day for 2 months and cleared it up. It had to build up and that took about 5 days to stop the pain. Good luck

I hope you have better luck with that aftermarket part than I had. I wasted money putting one in my 1014 trying to save a buck. After it burnt up in the first couple of seconds, I just ordered one from Jet.

Hint, if you have to order an OEM (which I recommend) then do NOT order it online. They charge you twice as much for freight. Order it by phone and the freight will be much more reasonable.

On my motor the terminals were screw terminals and didn’t need any soldering.

Well they Guaranteed the new part it was not a cheep part as far as these go and The company I had do the repair has been in business. for 100 years they have rewound many things for me over my 51 years so i trust the part they sold if it breaks they will have to fix it. It was an easy install of the motor and cover I do hope the old girl has life left in her.

I used the lathe all day and turned it on and off at least 50 times no problems I did tell the guys at the ems that you had said not to use a cheep part they said the one they installed was made right here in the USA
