I suspect someone has “learned” to view the project (multiple times) while they are NOT signed in in order to jack up their own numbers in hope of making a “Daily Top Three” rating. FWIW, when signed in you are not counted in the ongoing count tick.

I tend to agree with Mike. Isn’t there about only 44,000 people total joined? Something wrong there, for sure.

Don’t be too quick to judge.
Here and here are two by the same member. One has unrealistic #’s and the other not.
I suspect it may be a random glitch.

Interesting that Celticscroller had six projects posted over two days, and the one basically posted in the middle is the one that had the 10,000+ hits. All the rest are relatively low.

Here’s another one, although maybe within the realm of possibility. I think there is a glitch somewhere.

You’ve had over 100 views on this thread, and most of them probably took a look and added another 100 to the count.

Agree with “shipbuilder”—glitch somewhere. I noticed the same thing with “excessive” number count in first few minutes of a project being posted several weeks ago, but that was only one project while it appears to have happened with four (maybe five) projects this time. Hope management or board monitors are checking things out.

Shady indeed. What is the “not signed in” loophole? I would hope views are tracked on a browser cookie/IP basis.

another possibility to toss into the mix—some people have their own websites and blogs and post some of the projects on these sites, asking the readers to check it out etc. There’s a whole other audience brought into the mix.

http://lumberjocks.com/projects/71404 – Here’s another one, although maybe within the realm of possibility

I’m really really flattered that that number of views might be possible on a piece of mine.
I think glitch somewhere is way more likely.

some people have their own websites and blogs and post some of the projects on these sites, asking the readers to check it out
I was thinking that might be the case MsD, but one of the projects is mine, and I certainly haven’t done that, so perhaps a little more evidence for “glitch”.

I have had a few Top 3. I’d like to have more. It happens, or it doesn’t. I can’t predict what folks will like. If I could, I’d not be unemployed & struggling.

As for the high numbers, they look suspicious. Knowing databases, I’d say it is unlikely it happened inside LJ. More likely affected by an outside influence(not necessarilly from the author of the named projects). If one were interested, they could compare against the views of blogs or forum topics. However, no matter what… in 10 years(or less), it won’t amount to a hill of beans.

That same project got the daily top 3 before there was a single comment. the number of views does not make any sense whatsoever. It really does not matter unless it puts dinner on the table or folding money in your pocket…

Oh well… I know that the ”Daily Top 3” was started to give an attaboy for all the heard work that LJs put in on their projects, however, even that appears to have been subverted to someones alternative purposes.

Just this past week I noticed and then audited one of our LJs who cut and pasted his “Welcome to LJs” mantra on hundreds/thousands of consecutive posts. I quit checking after 60 PAGES of this cut & paste routine. I feel sorry for folks who are so driven by their own “post numbers” that they artificially inflate them by the thousands just to “look like _” (fill in the blank). I know that at times there are folks that want and do tell me to shut up on occasion. At least when that happens, it is because of an actual original thought or statement I made, and NOT the result of an identical paste #9,945th times, of thoughtless blabber.

Thanks for thinking about us with the “Daily Top 3”, but it appears that it has been trivialized into oblivion.

Dennis Hunter called me last night to ask me what I thought was going on. He thinks there is a glitch that his puzzle project got so many views. I certainly know he did not do anything nefarious. One post in the daily top 3 had 14,000 views in 54 minutes when we looked.

Probably Al Qaeda infiltrating our community! Apparently, they are able to find a way to influence what we are exposed to. Maybe it was Obama’s doings? The “handle” looks like his guilty smile…... lol Just kidding.

There is something weird going on. My latest project jumped by 5500 views overnight and I sure wasn’t sleeping with a spastic finger over the reload key on someone else’s computer.
But then I was sleeping, no? Better check to see if they took my truck to make their getaway.

The numbers have not skewed strangely since a couple of submissions went into the tens of thousandths. Are any of the administrators able to verify a problem or a reason.?

HorizontalMike said… FWIW, when signed in you are not counted in the ongoing count tick.

I thought that was the case too – perhaps it used to be.
But I’ve just tested on a very very old project and, even though I’m signed in, every “refresh” on the project page did bump the view count.

Nice to see the site admins chirping in here, as usual.

Whatever’s going on, it’s made the whole “Daily Top Three” thing completely meaningless and very misleading.
I think this project is cool, but it’s got the badge by virtue of the 5355 views (it has but 1 fave and 2 comments). And this is a cool bench, but, again, it’s the views that got it the badge (1 fave and 4 comments).
Posted between these 2 projects, was this piece, with 5 faves and 18 comments, but only 308 views, so it didn’t make it, yet clearly the LJ population think a lot more highly of it than of the other 2.

What’s going on?
Presumably there are site access logs showing what’s happening?
Yet silence…

I agree … the “Daily Top Three” is pretty much meaningless (I’ve never been quite sure what the intention of it is … I don’t view woodworking as a competitive thing).

I had two recent projects that showed astronomical numbers of views that were clearly artificially inflated.

Nobody died, nobody’s taxes went up, so it isn’t a big deal … just makes the site look silly.

Open and wondering/wandering thoughts…

Just how does say “Chisel Handles” compete with a “Walnut Highboy Chest”? Surely they wouldn’t/shouldn’t be in the same category for Daily Top 3 honors, are they? Oops, now I’ve mentioned categories… ARE there categories? And should we know/understand them? How many? What are they? Why those?... and… and.. ad nauseum…

FWIW, in a way we already have a pseudo “Top” competition, if you will, and that is the “most discussed” tag.
