I don’t know what’s more annoying, the posts about politics or the posts complaining about the posts about politics. So don’t act like the 2 year old you’re asking others not to be.. An adult can look at a post, decide they don’t agree with it an move on. There’s a reason Windows was oriented around clicks of the mouse. Click the back button or click on something else.

I agree and just like Alex said give politics it’s own catagory so that those clicking on “off topic content” aren’t tricked into clicking on something they care nothing about nor care to read hence politics.

Ken, quote “If you dont like them, which I dont either, dont read it. I dont….

Ken, I know we don’t live in a perfect world but things can be made to accommodate such as knowing what we are clicking on eh? I don’t read them but I would perfer not clicking on them either, not being labeled you know not what you’re clicking on.

I find this type of a thread a hell of a lot more productive and interesting then something you can’t change like politics. So whos really acting like a 2 year old the one throwing the insults are the one that’s trying to make a change and being professional about it hmmm maybe mirror perhaps?

I’m starting to think that maybe woodworking just isn’t that interesting to woodworkers. Right now, this is comment #15 after 40 minutes on a Sunday AM in the US. The first woodworking project with 15 comments was posted 15 hours ago, and that project has some awesome photos of stuff burning!

I contemplated leaving the last time this subject came up. At that juncture the moderator(s) required the “Off topic content” label as well as the silly “click to see the post” addendum. (Isn’t that what we all do for every post?)

Out of respect for their responsiveness, I decided to stay.

Every night I sweep the floor in my shop because I don’t like clutter. If I had the clout here that I have there, I would get the political clutter gone and quickly. But I don’t. I’m a guest here. So I accept the fact that there is a lot of detritus on the floor and watch where I step.

Reading the wisdom of A1Jim and Loren and Patron and Charles (and many who remain usernameless here for lack of ink) and learning from them is, for now, worth the inconvenience of the clutter.

Kindly,

Lee

Alexandre – did you know that you can hide the off topic titles when you go to “Pulse”? It is in the header, second from the right. I would like it better if I could keep them from displaying altogether, but this is much better than nothing.

The Pulse is pretty much my access point since it covers projects, blogs and forums. But since the “off topic’ forum titles can be masked, I just do not click on any of those.

Occasionally, I run into a political comment and realize I have strayed off the path into the land of “there be dragons here.”

Some people enjoy the political commentary, I just do not happen to. So this works, usually, to keep me out of those topics. I do not see politics enter into the project or blog posts much, so I am there much more than the forums.

Alexandre,
Have you asked your TV station to ban all political ads just because they might offend you or they might interfere with the regular ads? Good luck. The owners of this site have made it very clear that they don’t object to the off topic posts as long as they follow certain criteria. So I say again, get over it, use your mouse and move on.

By the way I am woodworking this morning. I came in to cool off from the heat in the garage. Didn’t work.

Alexandre-

There are not many that I see that are labeled shady. Its pretty clear if its at political post by the name, or hell, even by the author as there are a few guys that post nothing but political stuff. Sometimes I will click on them, sometimes I don’t, all depends on what the topic is.

For the life of me I can not understand why you wish to make others stop having conversations they like, so you don’t have to be bothered scrolling past them. I don’t read 90% of the off topic stuff, but when there is a topic that interests me I’ll jump in.

And as one final pragmatic problem to trying to stop it. It used to be called the coffee lounge, and it got pretty bad for a “family” site and was closed. (people posting porn just to troll others, lots of people whining and complaining about each other, etc) All that happened was all the political topic moved out into the normal threads. So as you were looking the the woodworking threads there would be all the non shop stuff. So it was opened back up as a way to contain it.

I am here strictly for the woodworking aspect of the site. I really have no interest in the other crap such as politics, religion, non-related woodworking advertisements or anything else that continually creeps in. My interest in woodworking is as strong as ever but my interest in Lumberjocks is steadily declining as more non woodworking content is added since it takes away from the overall feel of a woodworking site to a catch-all site.
... I ignore it as much as I can and do not read off topic content topics but as the membership of this site steadily grows…so does the non woodworking stuff…and it becomes much less of an appealing site.

I agree with Jonathan. I’ve been noticing a lack of moderation lately.. Or perhaps I’ve been reading stuff long before it gets moderated.

At the very least, t there really needs to be some sort of community moderation like Reddit, etc. it’s not a new thing.

Lastly, people need to re-evaluate why they are here.. Trolls who only post trolling articles need to have their posting privileges removed

(as a bonus suggestion, links to off-topic posts should have the title available when you roll over the text, so that you don’t have to click to know if its political

Alexandre, I agree with you completely. The have been a number of similar threads recently including this one yesterday: http://lumberjocks.com/topics/39945

Judging by the responses we are in the minority. As you can see some of these individuals who are advocating what amounts to free speech on this site believe we should not keep bringing this topic up. The irony of that is lost on them…...

This is a woodworking site – I think there needs to be some reasonable standards for the contents of posts. Politics, sex, religion, are not appropriate. This is a global website after all, with members of all countries, creeds and color. Members should be respectful of that and be respectful to each other.

Another one? I think the posts complaining about politics are just as annoying and just as disruptive as the political posts themselves. I don’t understand how it bothers people so much. I never participate in the political threads. I see them, but I don’t click on them. Much like I see a lot of woodworking stuff that doesn’t interest me – I don’t click on those either. If u want a site that only contains content that you personally want to view, then I suggest you go make one, and stop complaining about someone else’s site.

The only thing I would like to see is a separate political forum aside from “non shop talk”. I keep my toes out of it unless I get a notification that a buddy made a post there, because it is generally full of politics.. which I personally get enough of elsewhere. I don’t care if anybody else wishes to discuss it however. My general curiosity always gets the best of me if I start scrolling through, however, so I just avoid the forum altogether.

I am greatful for your openion and your post here on LJs about Politics, however, sir may I remind you that before there was an internet politics was discussed everywhere. Before the Revolation everyone discussed politics everywhere and the Revolution garenteed us the right to discuss this everywhere.

LJs has put a forum off to the side for everyone to discuss whatever they please, but must abide by the rules of the Site.
From the Revolutionarys to the Civil War to WW1 and WW2 and Koren, Vetmaum, to the Golf war to the Present there are many who have died and almost died who gave You Your right to disagree.

All I ask is that you disagree in a polite manor and everyone else do the same or you are Slapping the individuals in the face who gave you that right.

All the Best

The ideal situation is to have it divided by everything I like in one and everything else filtered out.

I keep reading people complaining that the site management doesn’t moderate. Try reading from an RSS feed and you will see that they do yank the really bad stuff pretty quickly. Do they kill every posting or reply that might offend someone? No. The posts people are complaining about are clearly marked as off topic. Now, I really like the suggestion of the politics forum but where does it end? Are we going to have to make separate forums for every individual persuasion?

The real solution is to read what you want to read. If you think it crosses the line, flag it. If the management gets a consensus of the members that really don’t want a topic to be here, they will most likely kill it off.

David – I do read straight from RSS.. Maybe I look at the posts too quickly, as I haven’t seen many pulled in the past month (maybe 1 or 2). The posts I had in mind that were entirely troll-ish posts are still riding high on the pulse last time I checked.

I’ve always found LJ to be a very balanced site in regards to moderation vs expression, WW-ing vs offtopic, and the general feel of “home” when I log in.. but lately its felt unbalanced.. and I think that shows throughout the entire site

Not a bad idea with the rollover, superstretch. My suggestion would be to tag political topics to more easilly avoid them. Kinda like a Turd. You can smell them a ways away so you can easilly avoid them.
Maybe give political discussions their own little icon.

With the current likelihood of clicking on a political discussion, I typically stay out of the OT forum. I’m sure I’m missing the opportunity to gleen some good woodworking information or provide some good input, but it is simply not worth it.

If you’re Upset about not being able to tell what the “Topic” is in Non Shop Talk and having to click on it to find out, then do what Newage has suggested back in Post #34.

When you take his advice and DO IT you’ll find that ALL Non-Shop Talk Topics that were previously shown as “Click To See/Read” or whatever the wording is, are now Showing What The Topic Is About.

It’s the PULSE PAGE. Once you choose ”Show All Off Topic Titles” it’s SET and now shows “Hide all Off Topic Titles”

Then it becomes a SIMPLE Matter of Clicking on it or NOT.

I’ll Repeat His Link for you: http://lumberjocks.com/topics/39989

That Link takes you to “Newages” Instructions as to HOW to do it.

This Screen Capture shows you the Upper Right Corner and what’s there once You get there. In this case it’s set to SHOW off topic titles (but reads “hide off topic titles”)

————————————————————————————————————————————————————

————————————————————————————————————————————————————

If you’d prefer to go Directly there, this should do it. http://lumberjocks.com/pulse

Rick

PS: I’m NOT here to discuss the “Ethics” or “Personal Desires” of having or Not having a Non-Shop Talk Page. Simply some Direction that might Assist “Some Of The Members.” Handle “The Situation” in a different way.

Personally….. I’m “Content/Happy” with things the way they presently are on here. I have NO Desire to change Anything.
