This probably won’t help, but sometimes a browser won’t allow
a back-arrow click but will support this: try Alt+LeftArrow

Step 1: Run a spyware/adware/virus check on your computer. Usually if you’re getting redirected to pages that weren’t your original history path, they have something to do with it.

Is it just IE9? Have you checked Firefox or Chrome to see if they are doing the same thing?

Try a different browser if you have permission to install one (if you are at work, you may mot be able to). In general you should aviod using IE. Think of it like the crappy throw away blade that came with your table or band saw. It’s the crappy browser that came with your computer. Try Google Chrome or Firefox.

The back button works just fine most of the time. The problem occurs (to varying degrees) on sites with ads. Whenever I can’t back up, clicking and holding on the back button gives me a list of ???? instead of a list of where I’ve been.

I don’t even have Firefox or Chrome. IE has always done what I needed so I’ve never seen much reason to change. It certainly has it’s faults, but it’s never been much of a problem before. I’m hoping that there’s a relatively easy fix so I don’t have to burn down the house to get rid of a few termites. – lol Since this only seems to happen on sites with ads, I’m wondering if the ads are somehow overwriting the list of where I’ve been. If so, do the site webmasters have a way to stop it? I posted this on LJ’s because the problem happens much more here than on any of the others.

I knew that I should have asked folks to refrain from discussions about how lousy IE is. I’m asking for a solution to this problem – not asking for suggestions to toss it out and start over. Thanks, anyway. – lol

I have Chrome(which rules) and firefox(which my sister uses for FB)
I uninstalled Ie…

Sawkerf, I don’t want to start a browser war either, but trust me, IE is terrible. Not only terrible, but can be dangerous to use. A lot of what I do for a living is internet security. My company doesn’t even allow use of IE expept to browse Microsoft sepcific, internal, sites (Sharepoint). IE has more security holes than any other product. Also because it is the most widely used (default) browser, it is also the most commonly targeted for exploits.

It’s not so much a usability/feature issue. Using IE can be a security risk if you are not vigilant about updates (there are so many of them, we in the industry call the first Tuesday of every month “Patch Tuesday”).

Another issue, and the one your are having here, is framework comparability. IE’s standards are awful and make web designers want to jump out of buildings. Since you can get any browser you want for free, web designers will standardize to webkit (Chrome, apple’s safari, and Opera I believe) and Mozilla’s Geko engine (Firefox). No one wants to create an entirely new framework for IE users – although a lot of websites do. When your browser requests information from a page, it tells the page what browser it is. This is also how less honest websites can exploit your unpatched security holes.

I hope you didn’t take this as a “Stop using IE because it’s not the cool thing to do!!” post. As a professional, and in my professional opinion, you should not use Internet Explorer

Also, as a professional, I recommend IE. LOL I do a lot of applications that I have to standardize to IE b/c that’s the only browser the clients are allowed to use. Personally, I use Chrome as my standard browser and fall back to Firefox if something goes wrong.

At work I use Firefox for dev purposes and check compatibility with IE when I’m done.

You could always download IE again, uninstall your current one, clear it out completely (this gets a little advance if you do a complete uninstall as you will have to get into the registry), and then reinstall the fresh copy.

My opinion would be to switch to something like Firefox and get an ad blocker plug-in and see if the problem disappears. If it suddenly begins happening in Firefox as well, it’s time to disinfect your system.

I’m no IT pro, but I find when my browser starts to ask strange I can often eliminate the problems by clearing all the cache’s (history, downloads, cookies, cached pages…). Doesn’t always work, but often seems to.

Doss, we do the same for the web2.0 portal crap or sharepoirnt repo’s, but that is generally over SSL/VPN/HTTPS anyway, never straight up internet. For general internet browsing I cannot safely recommend anyone use internet explorer.

Hey Joe, that wasn’t a shot at ya as I know exactly what you’re saying. Some of the places I work are so heavily firewalled and blacklisted that pretty much everything is not approved for use or visiting. I’m surprised they even allow internet access at all actually. I was just offering a different perspective.

You can clear the cache, cookies, and history (etc.) and maybe it’ll work temporarily, but this sounds like something is wrong with the browser itself or some malware is affecting it.

And, simply switching browsers may not be the answer as there could be any number of things making this happen. While I suggest using Firefox, I know full well it doesn’t always solve the problem.

Other browsers may help! IE is like a sieve for security and Microsoft has been trying to fix it forever.

The reason it appears to be so bad is because it is being attacked from so many different sources as it comes with every PC and therefore an obvious target. Apple didn’t have nearly this issue but they are starting to see some attacks too.

I use Firefox (from Mozilla) on my PC and Google (not Chrome) on my tablet and have not had any problems with either.

It took a while to get back here while I was babysitting my new grandson. Daughter and Gramma had to go somewhere and I was pleased to discover that Grandpa hadn’t lost a step as far as babysitting. The little rascal even smiled at me – and don’t anyone try to tell me that it he didn’t mean it. He knows that Grandpa has his back!. Changing a diaper without any safety pins was something new, but I managed. – lol

Here’s a screen shot of what I get after 5-6 clicks and back clicks on LJ’s. This list has replaced the list I should see, and continued clicking of the back button just makes the list longer and the last line disappears. This started a couple of days ago, and restarting the computer doesn’t seem to help. The only way out is to shut down and start fresh – a major PITA.

Have any other IE users experienced this, or is it maybe something in my computer? I’ve used Norton 360 for several years and wonder if this is something Norton misses.

Sawkerf, I’m the most computer illiterate person on this site and I have the same problem. When the backspace button doesn’t work I just click on that blue arrow pointing left in the left upper corner of my screen. That works for me.

That doesn’t look right sawkerf. I know you mentioned Norton, however Norton offers little protection for things like this. Download, install, and run Malware bytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/ . There is a free version, don’t pay for it. Also try Spybot. Again, this is free. Spybot has an immunize feature as well that adds a little protection. I’ve used both and like them.

I’m not sure that is your issue though. Your browser is simply not handling ads correctly. Those are legit ads, they don’t appear to be malware or spyware. Run windows update as well and see if there are any updates for IE 9 – they may be in the “optional” section. If you use auto-update, a lot of tomes you only get the “critical” stuff.

Also, I would seriously consider giving google chrome or Firefox a shot. If nothing else, you will be amazed at how much faster they perform. You can also make framework issues a thing of the past

This has happened to me when I wasn’t signed in. It seems to redirect me to all kinds of advertisements. It happens on other sites, too. Make sure you’re signed in and see if it still happens.

That blue button is what I’m talking about. It’s supposed to show a list of where you are (CURRENT PAGE) and where you’ve been during your session on the internet. The bottom entry should be your ISP home page. Each click of the blue button should move you down one entry on the list and back to whatever page that entry represents. Repeated clicks should eventually bring you back to the home page.

That works as it should for me – most of the time. On some sites (mostly LJ’s) that back button will suddenly stop working and the list shows repeated entries like I posted earlier. The “real” list is gone and I have to close then restart my browser to get back on the internet.

I’ll try some of your ideas although I’ve had no problems this morning. I’ve taken my usual tour to several news outlets and a couple of other websites. Occasional checks of my list show what Ive expected without any sudden substitutions. Like the fella says “Tis a puzzlement.” (Yul Brenner in “The King and I”)
