Rick, what a wonderful post.

You expressed so well exactly how I have felt. I have lots of “favorites” that I keep for various reasons. Either I want to build one like it or I want to show it to someone or there is a feature on that one particular project that I want to use later on, or on and on and on.

You really hit the nail on the head with your post. (altho you probably couldn’t hit a damn thing with your .30)

To add to my comment here, something I should have said long ago. This site is a treasure-trove full of inspiration, friendship, great ideas, etc. I don’t buy ANYTHING without checking it out here first, and almost always go with LJ recommendations I don’t build anything without checking what others have done to learn the hows and whys. LJ’s has actually added much positive to my life as I get much more satisfaction from better tools, better projects, learning the right stuff, etc.

So, thanks for posting such a great comment, and thanks to all the LJ’s who inspire and teach me so much (and include yourself in that list).

Mostly I keep favorites if it contains a construction along the lines of what I might have in mind for something down the road. Mine is never exactly like it but I gain clues to how I might modify it to get what I want. Occasionally there is a piece that I look at, would like to make someday, probably never will but hold onto it just in case I ever am able to make something like it. For example:

This piece by Pete Holzman. Is this a unique conversation piece or what? Beautiful indeed.

At present, I’ve built exactly none of my favorites, although there are a couple that I intend to copy, more or less. Mostly, though, my favorites are there because there’s something about them. A technique, a design feature, something that inspires me and that I want to incorporate into my own work.

Thanks, Bruce…..I just try to call like I see it…..Yea…there is some great information that you can aquire from LJs…We have some of the best woodworkers and craftsman on this site…..real artisians….I’ve always been curious about this subject, so I thought I’d just throw it out there….This has always been a good reference place to buy tools, power tools, and hand tools….You’‘ll most likely get the straight dope from these folks…..Good, bad, or indifferent, they will lay it out for you…..one way or another…..

I have favorited a LOT of the drum sander builds, and am using them for inspiration for my own drum sander build. So while not a copy of, I guess you could say I am building from my favorites.

An over window shelf I favorited about 2 years ago has been built and installed in one of our bedrooms, and I am in the process of remodeling the kitchen, and will include 2 of these…

The Harbor Freight dust collector mod is in limbo right now due to budget and schedule, but is on my to do list…

I am unsure about the sheet goods cart I favorited. I have found several other designs that seem to work well too…

So many projects, so little time, and even less money…

I’m like you Rick. I’ve favorited a bunch of stuff, but I haven’t actually built any of them. In fact I haven’t built much of anything for awhile. Great topic, Rick. I’ve got about 12 pages of favorite projects. I’ve built quite a few of them, but there are far more that I haven’t gotten to, yet. When I need inspiration or a quick project, I go to my favorites and look through them. I’d like to build every single one of my favorites, but like, dbhost said: too little time and too little money!

I just save them for the unique ideas. I also have a folder on my hard drive with just wood working pictues. When I’m trying to figure something out, I can play the slide show to see if I can find the idea I’m looking for. They often come from several different projects and I put them together out of whatever I have laying around. They definitely don’t look like the originals when I get through. Thanks for the inspiration guys.

Rick, I don’t use my favorites quite that way. For example I favorite some things that you can’t build. For example, the other day I I made a favorite of that big tree cutting machine that someone put up. If I like the way something looks like or if it’s interesting in some manner I make it a favorite. I made a favorite of someones log cabin. I know that I will probably never build any of them but I still might like to look at them again. I make something a favorite more for reference than anything else. It’s just an easy way to keep something that you might want to see again handy. That may not be what the favorites are for but it’s sort of what I use it for.

For example, I saved this picture of a sander spin down stand that someone here made. I thought it was better than having to hold your sander for twenty seconds or watch it skitter off across the bench.

I made one out of scraps. I modified it to hang on the wall, and added a place to put my drill.

Hey Rick:

Like a lot of others I save them for reference. Might be a Specific Feature of the Project or the Entire Project. Somtimes it’s just because it’s a Great Project but beyond my Talents.

I also have a Section in “My Documents”, on my Computer, known as “Wood Work All”. It’s further Sub-Divided into just about every type of Woodworking Project and Tools that you can imagine. I download a lot of Pics from the WWW but also Pics from My Favourites on here. The Screen Capture Below shows that Section. ALL of those areas break out into a LOT More Sub Sections.

I haven’t built any …BUT! This is one I HAVE TO BUILD!! Only one problem though. I can’t figure out where would be the best spot on the Boat to Attach It???

Hi Pal, I have never built a like for like, usually the favourite is for some better ideas or method on my own proposals but certainly I make use of what I saved although not every ocassion.

I have always asked the poster/owner if it they have any issues with me using their ideas, I haven’t had any refusals yet. I guess, like most of us we are flattered that others think our ideas are of use and value.
