Don’t think there’s any listing. Sometimes they say goodbye, like Autumn and CessnaPilot. Lots of times, they just vanish, taking everything with them. Kind of makes you wonder if your losing it when you go looking for someone who was ‘just here’ and they’re gone.

Sad that he’s gone. Wonder why folks decide to take everything and go like that? The ‘community’ part of this site makes me miss folks like Cessna and 3…

Thanks, Karen.

I’d venture to say most of the people who have left have done so because they were distressed about some aspect of “community relations”. Either too much politics, or religion, or just too much of folks arguing over various things. Some probably just felt the site got too big to suit their tastes. I have to admit, there was something nice about being a small community back in the days when there were only a couple thousand members.

I can understand it, but it’s still a shame. Some great folks and great woodworkers have moved on. I don’t really understand why anyone would want their projects and comments removed just because they were no longer interested in participating, but I guess that’s their choice.

Any one of us can stop posting on the site any time we want. The thing I don’t understand is, why members would want to delete all their contributions. It’s kind of like….. “I’m leaving and you can’t have any of my stuff”. Crazy…. If you want to go.. GO, but leave your contributions….. they may make a difference in how future members view the site and how they can learn…..

The part that bothers me about leaving is having some of the forums no make sense. I have had a few conversations on the forums and they no longer make sense because the context has been removed.

Interesting that this topic has come up…..recently I was so disgusted by some of the distasteful discussions about politics that I considered leaving LJs for the better part of a day. If I wanted to listen to another hot head babbling on about politics, I can just turn on any number of “news” channels. I joined Lumberjocks to get away from that nonsense. I don’t know why other people left, but if LJ’s turns into another open forum for politics instead of woodworking, I’ll be following their lead…......

@WudnHevn , Yup , that’s a good observation of what happens to those who ‘announced ’ they
were leaving . I think a lot of folks took very careful notice of that and decided to avoid that circumstance .

Then there was member “Jesus” who posted a pink back scratcher / dildo , and his account was deleted .
Oddly enough , not the first dildos that have had to be deleted on this site . His homepage bio stated
” I like traveling around , wearing sandals , and spreading good vibes .” I downloaded all that stuff . Of
course you can show a representation of a phallus here , it just has to be attached to an ’ artistically ‘
carved statue . The combination of the name “jesus” with the dildo and other plagerised projects from the net
posted within a few minutes of each other was designed to get the response that he wanted . I think
those ‘good vibes’ turned very sour in a big hurry . I thought his buddy icon foreshadowed what was to
come , and was a pun unto itself:

I could be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure I recall reading his goodbye post with a message to Martin telling him to delete all his posts. If memory serves me correctly, he was none too pleased with the political discussions here and thought it was overshadowing the joy of talking about woodworking. Its a shame. I don’t understand why people feel the need to preach about politics here.

Then there was the dramatic exit of Blaine Vonhagen . Blaine must have been upset by some political
postings ,because he went into some pretty heavy sarcastic raving on one ( which he had never done before) and then created his own novel way of showing his displeasure , and made sure his account would be deleted.
Care to know how he did that ? I’m surprised no one is talking about that departure that took place over Thanksgiving weekend . Political trolls responsible for one more’ casualty ’ . I will post Blaine’s farewell to
Lumberjocks in a separate box below because it will most likely be deleted , that was his intent . I do not share his view ,but I will post it to show you what he was feeling as he left

The best thing Martin has done was the “Hide off topic content” feature, on the pulse page. No matter how curious you are, don’t click on one of these and your chances of being pissed off are greatly reduced.

there are some LJ’ers that leave their accounts open
but have left for all practical purpose

i have friends that write me in regular mail
who don’t ‘log in ’ here
but just cruise through as guests
they don’t show up as being online here
but can see how things are going

courtesy and kindness
seem to be their basic motivation

most of us are here voluntarily
and have a dream of a sharing world
but some can’t seem to get it
and like to be noticed
by being rude to others

i send a PM (here) to
with my address
if they trust me they send their e-mail address

for my part
if i have something fun or relevant
i only use it to write them
and not make bundled mails
(everyone’s address shows on them)
so that it is an honor thing
if they don’t want others to know their address

so far it works

So I won’t go looking for folks, that’s all. Pretty much as KayBee expressed in the first reply. Have no intention of “bothering” anyone. We can see new arrivals with no problem. Kind of the reverse is what I was curious about. The military calls it Hails and Farewells.

I told myself I was going to stay out of those nasty threads but I can’t seem to leave it alone. I’ll skim past the personal attacks and the clearly emotional posts. When I can’t resiste joining in the melee, it’s usually to point out that both sides aren’t entirely different. RG’s right, of course. I care about as much about someone’s religion and politics as I care about what weight oil they oil their tools with. I’m still happy to talk about all three, though. I work hard and I see a lot of money going out; so I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t frustrated. But it’s not really worth arguing about that frustration here. We’ve all got our own frustrations and these proved too much for some folks. Like Smitty says, I’ll miss them and it’s a shame. Nothing really more than that.

It is too bad that people cant have more civil political discussions. I personally dont mind reading them, however they usually turn nasty and personal. Less interesting to me then, it is also too bad that people choose to no longer participate because of it. I would guess the vast majority just stop logging in or posting rather than deleting their profile. Deleting seems a little odd to me, but whatever works for them is fine with me. One of the internet’s shortcomings seems to be the lack of decorum or the heightened sense of aggressiveness people display. Tone is difficult to grasp, making it easier to go south quicker. I think it would be a nice feature that LJ could add a status feature on member’s homepage. Active/inactive tab maybe? Member could list accordingly.

I follow a few ww forums, and I was a moderator in one. (I didn’t want to keep doing that). I found that when people left and took all their stuff it was always because of religion and politics. I don’t even look at the O/T posts because I know they’re going to make me mad. Like cathyb said earlier, all I have to do is turn on the news for that. I come here to talk about woodworking. The reason why I shy from a couple of forums and rarely post in them is just because some people can be really harsh, and some of the forums seem rife with that. I found LJ to be exceptionally nice folks in general. I haven’t read one nasty word….but I haven’t been into the O/T either…..

I think it’s great that LJs honors requests to pull down posts, projects, etc., don’t like it when it actually happens. The topic of O/Ts been beat to death in other posts and discussions, I know, but 3finger’s departure made me think, “Has anyone quick LJs because of a woodworking post?”, or left because there wasn’t a place to argue? The knowledge base is always changing, I get that. I just hate that folks are turning their back on LJs over the O/T “feature.”

Thanks, all, for looking. I’ve exercised my demons on the topic so I’ll go back to regular programming. :-)

One last word for me before returning to regular programing. When I first came here a very fine gentleman took me under his wing, he became my friend and woodworking mentor. There was a post started and it began to turn nasty. Chips was very respectful in his distaste for the posts on the thread and you could tell it was making him mad. He chose to take a long break. I waited a while and sent him a PM. His step daughter replied that Chips had passed on to the big shop in the sky. In some ways I can blame the thread for taking some of that short time with my friend. That was one of the first big problems I had here. The next problem was I was allowing myself to be drawn in to the arguments. No more, from now on I will smile and walk away.
Its Christmas guys. Cant we all get along.

This is kinda like watching television. If there is something I don’t want to watch I don’t tune it in. Desperate Housewives is going off the air in a couple of months and I have yet to watch an episode. Don’t figure I have missed much. The title tells me that they bash women and I am not into that. On LJ there are people I read and some I don’t. I read everything in the beginning and have learned that there are some subjects I don’t enjoy and some people I don’t enjoy. No one twists my arm to read everything. If a person wants to leave then that is their business. I wouldn’t beg anyone to stay but I have yet to figure out why you would leave. Maybe I am part of the problem and I should leave I don’t know. I have not plans to do that so you aren’t getting off that lucky. Have a good evening.

JuniorJock:

At first I thought you were using that link to degosse as proof that ”The system we have as of now does not work. Here is proof…..”

Then I read your comments under the Link. Correct me if I’m wrong but I THINK you’re saying that some “GOOD STUFF” gets Posted in Non-Shop Talk. Yes? No?

I took about 115 Days off also due to some of the BS that was constantly getting Posted all over here and the Sarcastic Etc. comments on others Posts.

I remember when “Coffee Shop” was a good place to go and share a few laughs or Post New Babies as in degooses Post. Then they shut it down becuase of all the Disrespect that was showing up.

When I came back I decided to see if I could Revive Non-Shop Talk as it use to be in “Coffee Shop”. I’ve done a few “NICE” and Humorus and Informative Posts in there since then. On them all, I’ve made some mention of “Lets get this Place Rockin’ again!!

The comments that have been made are GOOD and there’s always a follow up to most of them by other members. BUT! As you are perhaps saying a LOT of people won’t even go there anymore due to all the %##$$%&* in there.

The “views” are Not Great and the “Comments” compared to the number of views is Very LOW. THAT might be another problem on here altogether.

I have also “Blocked” a few people from coming on there, given their Past History on some of my other Posts and their Very Obvious “I am the Greatest and Most Intelligent Person/s On Here” attitude.

As far as People leaving LJ’s … By all means, do so, but don’t blame the Site for Leaving you can Read/Do whatever you want on here. Your Mouse isn’t forcing you to Click on something you don’t like and don’t post some Sob Story about why you are leaving. I won’t be at your Going Away Party!

What they have Posted here is, I believe as “The Rules” state their Property, If thay decide to have it removed, or not, is THEIR Decision to make. Not mine, whether I agree or not.

Religion and Politics. I know some people enjoy talking about it. If it’s allowed you can’t critisize them for doing so.

Personally I’d be VERY HAPPY to see it “NOT ALLOWED” !!!!

My Regards To All: Rick

PS: This might or might not be another “Reason”. I USE to also like doing Welcome To Lumberjocks, I’ve done it a few times, but Stopped doing it. Why? Three days ago and tonight I tried again. Same Results.

The First 2 Rows are ALL SPAM that’s 14 new members on Page One. I stopped at that point. But now I’m starting to have FUN doing it! I grabbed 5/6 “Anti Spam” pictures off the www ,doctored them up a bit and can Post them Real Quick!! (When the site is working properly). ....LOL… It also does NOT get taken off.

I don’t have a lot of buddies. I do a lot of lurking. However, I did buddy a young chiropractic student here and all of a sudden I was inundated with non-shop talk. Finally, when a long time poster announced he was leaving, my new buddy told him to just shut up and leave. I de-buddied that fella that day. I hated to do it because I felt like I was being mean to him. But my LJ’s experience has been much more focused since.

I have been a member here for quite sometime and used to post far more often. It has saddened me the turn that the site took sometime back when we started to experience some Facebook style escapades that I have since chalked up to selfishness, insensitivity and lack of maturity. I wonder if folks would act the same way in person as they do online? Do they care that there are real people on the other end of the comments? Would they feel the same if it was someone else verbally attacking their family or friend? I have to wonder where society as whole is heading if this is becoming the accepted way of treating each other.

There are a lot of great people that actively contribute to this site. It’s because of them that I am still here and will continue to contribute in whatever way I can. It’s the differences that make each of us unique and they give us to the ability to view problems from a different angle. I’m an American who is half German and Half Cherokee. I’m also ex military… Non of these things make me better or worse than anyone else in this world; they just make me different.

Sorry for jumping up on the soapbox… Have a wonderful weekend everyone and thank you for the inspiration you provide through your knowledge, insight and creativity.

The site has increased by 10000 members since I joined a year and a half ago. What I miss the most is there only being 20 new projects posted in a day…having time to look and comment on most of them, and in turn having my projects commented on. It really made me feel part of a community. With the new format and ever increasing volume on this site it’s hard to see even a 1/4 of what is posted.

Let’s really get to the bottom of all this.
For myself, I am totally open to everyone and everything. I look at woodworking to be the serious stuff and the basis of why we are all members. Yes woodworkers (most) have a sense of humor and can enjoy a laugh.
Any other subject however, I see as fair game for some fun because it’s not really the main purpose of the site, BUT is additional areas where woodworkers, if they wish, talk among themselves, while maintaining some decorum in doing so. If any LJ is not so inclined to participate in “other discussions” then they can easily avoid them.

Laughter is also a good tool to invest in. It can be used to diffuse a conflict, pick someone up, a friendly insult (roast) to smile at and good therapy for those who are experiencing difficult times.

I may be one of the site clowns, but I enjoy it and hope that I can make people laugh and have fun. None of my posts are ever intended to be nothing more than, except for the occasional projects I am able to make.
