I own the Grizzly G0604. It is a slightly bigger version of the one you are considering. The main differences that I see are 4 blades instead of 3, 1.5 hp instead of 1 hp and a slightly longer table. I like my planer a lot. It’s solid and dependable and adjusting the fence is pretty easy and accurate. You may need to go a little slower with the G0452 but you’re probably not in a hurry any way. Advice – I cannot use my planner without a dust collector connected. The chute that the chips go down will plug up without the dust collector connected. Of course, you can clean it out by hand every few passes, but that would be a pain. I don’t know that the G0452 would have the same problem but I would not be surprised if it did. -- Rich, Cedar Rapids, IA - I'm a woodworker. I don't create beauty, I reveal it. |

I have a rigid jointer and it works great but i do plan on upgrading it in the long future just because of the limited width is only 6 1/8. That would be a pretty tough decision because i have been looking as well. I do own a jet 14 inch bandsaw and a jet floor stand drill press both brand new a few years ago and I am very happy with jet. I do not currently own any grizzly things but heard they are equally great but can not speak for them. Thats why I probably would lean towards the jet, I know its pricey but can beat you would not regret. If budget is tight, then im sure the grizz will be just as good, but resale down the line may not be as good if you ever decide to upgrade from there. hope any info helped. Brent -- BN in Indiana |

You can get a 6” Grizz with the spiral cutter for the price of the Jet. For about $30 more you can step up to an 8”. Everyone I know started with the 6” but eventually got the 8”. My 2 cents. |

I think I would jump on the G0656P myself if I was set up for 220 volt. I’m not. One of these days I need to put in some 220 circuits. Ya know – 220 volts can kill ya. -- Rich, Cedar Rapids, IA - I'm a woodworker. I don't create beauty, I reveal it. |

My shop is wired for 220. I would probably have to run another wire and slap in a 220v breaker, but that isn’t a problem though. Just have to be careful :) Only thing that would deter me from the 8” for right now is the fact my shop is only 12×20. So far i’ve got a 1023SL ts, bench, router table, miter saw bench, air compressor, planer, band saw, lumber rack, 2 shelves, kobalt bench, 3 vises, heavy duty grinder. I’m pinched for space :( Ok, i’m looking at the 604 grizzly right now vs the jet. I’d still get the 8”, but until I expand my shop it’s just a tad too big I think. What I would like to do is when that time comes and I need to go from a 6” to an 8” is to sell my jointer and get the 8”. That would be 3-5 years I would imagine though. I may not need to go from 6-8, I usually build smaller projects such as entertainment consoles, hutches, book cases, buffets, etc…. Who knows, I’ve not went down that path yet :) So i’m looking at now perhaps the following between the griz and jet. All I can think of for now. Thanks guys, Kevin -- Williamsburg, KY |

Sounds like you could use a combo machine. You should seriously look at a Jet JET JJP-12 (or HH). It’s a 12” joiner/planner combo. The biggest issue with woodworking is trying to match up the capacity of your joiner with your planner. Why have a 13” planner when the widest board you can join is 6”? If space is an issue, and a 12×20’ shop certainly falls in that category, look at a combo machine. The jet comes either with straight blades or helical. (708475 or 708476). Either way, you would love this machine. My buddy has a MiniMax all-in-one machine and part of it is the 12” joiner/planner combo and I always drooollllll…. http://www.jetwilton.com/us/manufacturing/en/products.html?node=4531&category=7200 -- "You should have seen the size of the splinter!!" |

While the planer/jointer combo is pretty nice, the price is out of my range. A part of me wants to go ahead and get the 452, but I keep thinking that I should go ahead and buy the JET for some reason. The only bad thing is it’s $300 higher than the grizzly. I wish that I had noticed it was $599 during black friday. Either way, one is getting ordered tomorrow. My feeling keeps pushing me toward the jet for some reason even though i’m a big grizzly fan. Steve, I think that’s my best solution also is to go with a 6” for now and when it’s time to upgrade come and post back. Thanks, Kevin -- Williamsburg, KY |

I think you merely pull the pulley off the cutter head, then slide it out… lol… -- "Ah, So your not really a newbie, but a I betterbie." |

Man, i’m still up in the air now, for what I was spending on the jet the 8” as Steven pointed out is just a 100 bucks more. I’d just have to take 2 of my shelves out that I got from lowes and put them in my building. ponder What to do, what to do :) Then again, if I get the 452 I could get a 1hp dust collector perhaps. So considering I have no dust collector right now what about this setup? Jointer: DC: Any thoughts? Thanks, Kevin -- Williamsburg, KY |

Well, I believe that I will be purchasing this jointer. Seems as though my wife pushed me in that direction, LOL. :) If it was up to her she would get on her laptop and order it as i’m posting this, but I wanted to wait and call grizzly and make sure it’s in stock first. http://www.grizzly.com/products/8-x-72-Jointer-3-HP-w-Mobile-Base-Polar-Bear-Series/G0656P I’ll also need to get a dust collector to go with that. Will this DC be enough to go with that jointer. It will also be connected to my 1023SL table saw. Only 1 machine will ever be running at a time with the DC too. -- Williamsburg, KY |

A dust collector is need for a jointer. I have the G0583Z 1HP Canister Dust Collector and it’s connected to G0555P bandsaw. Works great. -- shdesign3.com |

Kevin get at least a 1 1/2 HP or 2HP dust collector for 8” jointer. It will run more efficient than a 1 HP. -- shdesign3.com |

Kevin, now that you’ve had the G0656P for a while, what do you think about it? I am very close to ordering this jointer and would like to get an opinion from someone that owns it. Are you satisfied with it? how do the knifes hold up? I’m hoping that they will have it reduced or free shipping on Black Friday. |
