The bandsaw in your link is for a machine that Ridgid only recently released. It sounds form your post like your buddy has had his bandsaw for a while. So I’ll assume you’re referring to the BS1400 that was discontinued a year or so ago. I’ve owned a BS1400 for a couple years now… are my thoughts from another thread:

I knew about the machine’s reputation before I bought it, but I stumbled upon one that was on clearance for $149(ish). At that price, and with the option to return, I took a chance. I had to:
-Duct tape a couple of nickels to each wheel in order to balance them. LOL
-Reinforce the stand with 3/4 ply
-Replace the lumpy, ill-fitting belt
-re-shim the lower wheel to get it ‘close’ to coplaner.
Even after all that, the machine’s performance is “good nuff’”…..but nothing more.
I probably should have held out.

I’d advise you to turn on your friend’s machine and see how it behaves. If it jumps all over the floor, then you might pass on it. If it runs halfway smooth, you might take it home. It CAN be a pretty decent machine. If it’d help your disabled buddy and you don’t mind spending a few hours tweaking the machine….it might be a worthwhile buy. But if you’re looking for a top-notch bandsaw….this ain’t it. If you just need something to cut an occasional curved piece or occasionally cut thicker stock, then its fine.
