The how-to you linked seems to recommend gluing the breadboard ends in place. That is incorrect. Wood expands across its width more than across its length, so you can’t just glue it on or it will soon crack. There is a whole science to breadboard ends… http://lumberjocks.com/pintodeluxe/blog/31777

As far as design work, you could try sketchup or some hand drawings.
