Just got back from a hunting trip in Luna, New Mexico. We didn't get a elk but we saw plenty, unfortunately all Cows and Rag Bulls. A herd of about 40 Elk crossed our path, beautiful animals and they sound like a freight train running by. I did get within about 20 meters of a 10 point Mule Deer, not deer season in the area. I had a deer tag for another area but it was 100 miles away and didn't think I could track it that far. Haha. My buddy has another chance in November, crossing fingers. I might go to Oklahoma in the next couple of weeks for a Deer, crossing fingers on that hunt too.
Really an incredible hunt and great time with my buddy in the back woods of Mid West New Mexico. Mostly pine in the area but the Aspen and Oak are making a comeback, just incredible colors from them.
That is for sure!! Here is WA the Cascades are so steep, you better be sure you are up to the task before you take a shot unless you are in good enough shape to rock climb with 100# on your back ;-)
Nice photos, looks like beautiful country. Good luck with the rest of the season.
I missed a few great opportunities that were just out a bit out of range of my .54 flintlock ;-) or too brushed in to risk an arrow deflecting ;-(
Jimbo,
Haven't been there yet not quite sure where it is at, been to Mora and Farmington both beautiful areas. Valle Grande is in the Santé Fe National Forest? Cactus and Mesquite is what I am use to, but we do have the Organ Mountains and they are Gorgeous in their own right.
Jay,
I tell you it is peaceful and I love the smell you get off the pines, its been a long time since I have had either. The trip was 7 days of pure heaven, except for the smell I gave off.
Topa,
Thanks, and Luna area is considered a primitive area so you can only shoot Muzzle Loader or bow. A lot more to think about if you are limited from 20 to 150 meters.
Bill,
Organ Mountains = tells me you are somewhere near Las Cruces. The Valle Grande is between Jemez Springs and Los Alamos, where Longmire is/was filmed - the largest caldera in the U.S., with grass up to your waist that herds of elk feed on, and a really nice stream full of trout. Check the Valle Grande for more info.
Looks like a great area I will have to look into it next time I am in that area. I live in the Mesilla Hills area of Las Cruces, better known as the West Mesa. Basically, my house then desert till you hit Mexico or Tucson.
That's what its all about, Jim. You just can't beat it.
