Picture of a clamshell head. Basically the head has a rounded piece of metal that bolts to a square head making the square cutterhead round. The problem is that the bolts on these are prone to fail throwing a piece of metal and sharp blade out at high speed. Pretty scary. Clamshell heads are no longer used for this reason. Its possible this machine does not have such a head. But I would darn make sure before paying any money for it.

That being said…. That price is an excellent one!!......... for an already restored 1950’s 8” jointer.

Its pretty bad for one in need of a complete restore. I would say this machine is worth 400 assuming you don’t mind the head. (maybe you plan to replace it with a helical head anyway?). I would leave it direct drive if it were me.
