DeWalt 7490X or Dewalt 745 and Rousseau Stand?

I am looking to get either a DeWalt 7490X or a DeWalt 745 (with Rousseau stand).

I don't have space for a permanent shop so I have to lug the saw up a set of narrow stairs from my basement. weight and dimensions are an issue.

I like the 28.5 rip for the 7490X, but the dimensions and carry weight will make it a little awkward. Should I consider the Dewalt 745 and a Rousseau stand instead of the DeWalt 7490x

I have a Dewalt 7491RS, which is effectively the same saw as the 7490. It works great as a portable saw (no cabinet saw in terms of capacity and ease of use, but I can get very accurate cuts with it). I actually don't use the stand much so my experience with the saw is free-standing. There are significant improvements to the unit compared to it's predecessor (DW744) that payed dividends, to include:
  • Open frame makes it easier to align the blade parallel to miter slots
  • Dust shroud (DW745 may have a shroud too?) and better guard design…you'd be surprised how much dust can get collected through the guard
  • Rack and pinion fence design is easy to align and keeps the fence nice and parallel, as well as ease of micro adjusting.

The Rousseau will add weight and possibly making it less portable. It's essentially inspired by the Biesemeyer fence design. The fence will be more stout than the aluminum fence on the Dewalt as is. Not to mention, it will cost more.

If you are going to do that, you might as well just get the DWE7491RS and have it all in one.

I don't have enough room at the basement door threshold/landing to turn and get the stand up the stairs.

I should have enough room to "place" the saw on a dolly that is already positioned/aimed to pull up the stairs.

Ah, the downsides of a 1950's post WW2 house. ;-)

@paxorion, How tall is the 7491 (without the stand)?

I might have enough room to put the saw on a wheeled hand truck to get it up stairs.

With the stand the working height goes to about 36" i believe? I'm 6' tall so that's a better height than 34"

The mobile stand is hands-down fantastic for mobility and very stable. But it is very big, and raises the weight of the saw from ~60lbs to just shy of ~100lbs.

What is the distance from the top of the stand to the top of the table? When I measured in the store I think it was 15 inches.

Thanks for the input everyone. I did pick up the 7490X and it is perfect for what I need. The saw is so well balanced that it feels much lighter than the stated 60 pounds.

I can easily carry it up the narrow stairs I have without any issue. The hand holds make it a piece of cake to move around.
