You didn’t say but I will assume you are working with a face frame??
Biscuits won’t add much in the way of strength if that is why you are using them and the smaller size will help even less. They are best for keeping things aligned as you glue them up.
If they won’t show I would use Kreg pocket holes and screws to hold it together. Even if they are visible you can plug the holes.
If you can’t use the screws and still want to strengthen the joint consider dowels inserts or there are other joints you can make, such as lap joints, and mortise and tenon.
