If you have a can of oil based stain that's is too light in color, could you tint it with a darker oil based stain?for example adding a bit of Red Mahogany to Early American stain to give more reddish tint?
I'm thinking of experimenting with the same type of stain but thought to ask if anyone has done it before.
Hi Andy,so you have done it before,I will document it for sure, same wood same ratio, etc.sometimes you can't find the exact color ready made so we have to make our own mix.
I did all the woodwork in my daughter's clinic with color mixed MinWax stain. I used a 60cc syringe to measure the stain and wrote the mix on the jar lid.
Thank you all,I'm going to start mixing and testing Tomorrow,Andy, using a syringe to measure the ratio is a great idea,I'll have to get a few of them .
Not only can mixing different stain colors be done successfully, mixing paint with stain is possible. as well. Paint can darken a stain more quickly than another stain. Testing is imperitive, not only to achieve the right color but to get the level of opacity required and to determine if it is the correct approach and look for a given project.
Oil stain can be darkened by adding powdered artists pigments.
I get them from Woodworkers Supply but I imagine a fine
art store will have them or can order them.
It should come as no surprise that many "dark" stains are
dark only on some woods and fail on others. Why? cost.
The manufacturers don't want to make the stains really
dark because it's more costly to them.
You can make a very dark brown stain from roofing tar
dissolved in mineral spirits. Works great.
