To refine what I was saying…. When you click on the “Forums” tab, all the forums come up at the top of the page, showing how many posts are in each. Then, right below, ALL forum topics are listed.

It seems like it would be pretty easy to put a filter check box next to each of the forums listed at the top so that any ones you checked would be excluded from the list of topics. So not only could you filter out the coffee lounge posts, but let’s say I didn’t want to see any “trade and swap” posts, I could filter those out as well.
