Hello,
I'm new to the forum and a new owner of a Makita 2040 Planer. The height adjustment of the planer bed seems to be locked up. I downloaded a owners manual and don't see it referencing a way to lock this so I am assuming it is jambed. I was able to lower the bed but can not get it to raise. The gears under the planer bed look to be aligned properly. Has anyone else had issues with this, any suggestions? I've oiled all of the posts and gear but it doesn't seem to be helping. Everything looks to be in good shape so I wouldn't think it is binding up….

Thanks,

Travis

The table height adjustment on that machine is pretty much the same as what is used on my 2030.. only difference is you have 4 posts instead of 2. The tolerances are tight, so you need to make sure the posts the table rides on are clean and free of any rust or buildup and well lubed. The height adjusting shaft and gears also needs to be clean well lubed, particularly the needle bearing on top of the threaded rod that supports the table. There is no table lock, nor is one needed, so it most likely just binding on the posts. It took me a couple of days messing with mine before I got it working smooth, and basically involved cleaning the posts with various abrasives and lots of WD-40 and running the table up and down over and over again to get it freed up. Like I mentioned, mine only has two posts, so you will have twice as much work as I did :)

Thanks MrUnix and Buckethead, I will check the gears/sprocket for broken teeth. I think I probably just need to clean it a little more. The post look pretty good but maybe I will shine them up a little more. I have a feeling it was binding on the previous owner as the plastic handle is cracked, I've got a new one on order from Replacement Parts. I'm also in the process of getting the infeed rollers resurfaced. The originals are in tack but not pretty. I was going to use the place in Bend, Oregon.

Western Roller (in Bend, OR) is great.. had them recover the rollers on one of my 2030's and they turned out absolutely fantastic and should last a lot longer than the originals. They even called me a couple of weeks after shipping them back to make sure I was happy with them or had any problems. I'm sure they will do you right.

Cheers,

Not sure why they felt it necessary, but there is no need to pop the master link to remove the chain.. just take the spring off the tension roller and the chain should come right off.

Cheers,
Brad
