Yep wildwood – - your find is what I was coming up with, which is still a perfectly square box… but the dovetails themselves are complex and seem impossible.

Those are called “double twisted dovetails”

mrjinx…..It fascinates me because I cannot figure it out…. YET!

Bondo and others… I don’t think it is sculpted after the fact, based on the Uniform thickness of the wood in the dovetails.
The through dovetails are an even 1/2 inc thick stock… just curved.
If you sculpted it after making the square box, the ends would have a taper from top to bottom.

John – I saw the twist done as off center turning and by sculpting a solid piece, but the interior part of shaping is a challenge. as is the joinery.

Gonna have to play with it… The good news is I have some wood that is twisted to begin with :-)
