Hey Noel
I know everyone turns there nose up at butt joints ,because it’s what people use that don’t have much experience in woodworking, But for this application a butt joint with mechanical fasteners(screws or nails) will work fine. If that’s not the look you want try large finger joints but still with fasteners or even hand cut dovetails. The problem with miters on out door applications is when the wood shrinks back your miter opens remember a miter is a type of butt joint but with even less strength unless reinforced because your connecting end grain to end grain. Cedar should last longer because of it’s tannic acid content , but because of that if your going to paint cedar it requires a well bonding oil base exterior primer before you paint . You may also use a solid body exterior stain without primer . Just like Jerry said ceder is soft it will route like butter assuming there are no knots
