So I just bought my first hand plane, kind of on a whim at an auction. It's a baileys number 5, looks old, haven't used hand planes before so still gotta learn more about them, are they any good? Spent $20 on it
Yea, you did good for twenty bucks and no shipping.
That's not a crack by the mouth is it?.......ouch
it has the straight cap hole (not kidney shaped) so I think that makes it a type#15 or 16? you can research it.
bummer the handle is broken. Lately, that's a deal killer for me but I'm down to fine tuning my collection, not adding another #5 that needs a handle. the handles are not easy to make but you might be able to do a splice on to this one. or don't worry about it.
It will always be worth what you paid for it and you can use it as your first plane to refurbish and sharpen.
Well it's a repaired crack, didn't see it until after I bought it, it's been welded and grinded down but looks fine. The handle is broken, I thought maybe it just needs to be screwed down. They have some smaller ones and a lot more tools later on today.
220s don't get a lot of money, they're a dime a dozen. it's like the first plane anyone buys.
but I never met one I wouldn't consider owning if it was clean, old and cheap…..real cheap.
Here's what all I ended up getting today, pissed I didn't get the 5.5 or the bandsaw I was wanting but spent under $100 on everything so wasn't too upset
If the weld holds the plane will probably be fine after flattening the sole. A new handle is not easy but not difficult. Go to Lee Valley and search for "handle template". You can download the drawing. You can take a look here http://lumberjocks.com/OSU55/blog/39391 on my blog for tuning and rust removal.
Nice haul. 100 bucks don't get you much these days.
The #5 handle doesn't look near as bad in this picture. I thought the top 1" was missing. This works fine.
The pipe clamps are decent….Craftsman? If you have any black pipe laying around, I'd swap it for that galv. pipe. grabs better without digging into the pipe and leaving nasty edges which aren't good during glue up.
Went for like $30 or so, the guy didn't see me trying to bid again on it for some reason he was pretty old and I'm not one to yell out, was kinda pissed about that but eh it happens, they were quick to say sold because of so much stuff. There was an older craftsman thickness planer that went for $310, thouhtt it was a bit much especially since it had rust all over the table of it.
Haha yea thanks for the help, I don't know enough about hand tools yet.
