I have done more of these bevels than I care to remember back when I installed water pipe for public water and sewer systems, and we used a coarse wood rasp. Of course, back then I had no idea what a “block plane” was.

Just remember that the longer you make the bevel, the easier it is to join. Don’t forget the lubricant either. For drinking water systems we had to use a particular kind, but for non-potable stuff we often just used dishwashing liquid, maybe mixed with just a bit of water.
