Hey gents…. As mentioned in the title I'd like to get a remote for my HF DC. Motor says it's 2hp, but that has been questioned here on LJ's before ;o)

Any suggestions? What are ya'll using that's been working for you? It's 110V btw…...

Thanks in advance!!

Which HF DC do you have? They sell several, and power requirements vary.

If it is the 2HP model, the unit syenefarmer recommended is asking for a fire. That thing is rated for 13 amps, the HF DC pulls 20 on startup.

I have heard many recommend the Long Ranger remotes that Penn State and others sell…

Been considering grabbing one for myself actually…

I have the Lone Ranger that dbhost linked to on mine. Bought it at rockler with a 20% off coupon. I didn't want to take any chances so I figured the extra cost would help me sleep better at night. Why risk anything when you can spend an extra $50 and protect your house/family/etc?

You can make something like Bert has for less than $35 or so, and be set for life. The difference is you would want a 120V relay instead of the 240V one he has. The relays can be had for less than $10, the switch can be had for $10 or so, and figure another $15 for the plugs and wiring. I use such a setup for my paint turbine. If the remote fails (the most common happenstance), it's $10 to get it back up and running. The relays are industrial rated and last forever in this service.

I use the Woods remote also. The relay trick is a good one, but I haven't bothered. I won't get a fire, mine is not near anything flammable. It's MUCH more likely to just burn out than start a fire anyway, but i don't even see any sparks. Very good product for a reasonable price.

Dumb thought, but if you have something like the Iris system or other smart technology in your home, why not swap the outlet your DC is connected to for a smart outlet and just turn it on with your phone?

Thanks for the responses so far, I appreciate it!!

Bert - I haven't got enough talent/know how to rig up relays and all that stuff…

dbhost - All I have a dumb phone and dumb outlets, and have no idea what the Iris system is. Me and the dumb phone & outlets get along just fine LOL, but I do appreciate the suggestion!!

I have a couple of these directed between my table saw and radial arm saw ,with blastgates so I can have both of them at once on the tablesaw or radial arm saw. What I did was to reconfigure the wiring by passing the nvr switches fitted to the dust extractors front end , and had a new larger switch strategically placed for me best all round was the front of my tablesaw, now I can simply switch it all on from there.
As far as ceiling extractor (the filter kind with squirrel cage motor fans inside is concerned) I have a jet over my saw area which I boughht came with a bvuilt in set of various remote control switches, plus a bigger one with two motors inside which I made without remote switching ,which I will place above my lathe, and turn on with a bathroom type shower long string switch, which I place at a convenient place hanging from the ceiling next to my lathe . With a quick flick it it either switched on or off. cost about eight dollars or less complete no need imho to pay seventy dollars for nothing . Alistair

Like Bert, mine came from HD. It was sold as an outdoor lighting remote. It's used every day for the last 3 years. No problems.
The outlet bar has four receptacles and the remote can be switched to control each one separately. Nice, but I only use one.
