I bought a brand new dust extractor for my woodshop. To be used for the seperate room I have for my lathe.I noticed although I only tried it out provisionally it was getting choked up with long stringy type of stuff that comes off from roughing cuts on the lathe the fine dust is fine but of course as the impeller is choked up I need to clean it all out by hand before further use. I am reluctant to use it purely for fine dust extraction only . I find like most of you that the flooor after a good hours turning is almost up to my knees in swarf LOL anyway I am sure we all know that there are five bags of chips and dust coming of a little bit of wood, Magic or what ? LOL anyway, I have a single two bag type ,single stage two horse power with a no seperator unit. I don't as yet own a seperator so have know knowledge of there useage apart from what I have gleened on youtube ,but with this non cyclone type of dust extractor I need (in my way of thinking) a seperator barrel or box to catch the heavy chips stringy swarf type of material.
Anyway I have been scouring youtube and there seems to be a lot there to help someone in my predicament.Should in your knowledgable opinion try to convert my single stage dust extractor to a cyclone or simply make a seperator between them as said the dust extractor is brand new only used for about five minutes or so so it is not that which is at fault.
I really want dust extraction at my woodlathe .
I have two more of these types of single stage extractors at my table saw and bandsaw, and they do a great job and it states in the advert when I bought this one that they do chips as well as dust etc.any advice would be great especially if you have pictures or videos but advice is what I need. Please help an old codger out of a dusty hole LOL Alistair ps love you guys/n /gals

Like bondo says - that's exactly what you need. Plus, I removed the input and exit screen from my DC, the impeller doesn't even know they're missing, as everything passes right on through. That way it doesn't get all clogged up.

Alistair, I built a really simple chip separator I saw in an old Shopnotes. It looked WAY to simple/cheap to work but it has functioned very well to gather all the planer debris. And is really simple to empty a link…...

You may have to go to my project to read the details.

I use the Thien trash can separator. That way the chips do not go thru the impeller. It does a remarkable job as I will empty the can 10-15 times before ever emptying the bag. It virtually separates all of the heavier chips. I also have a vacuum gouge for roughing work. They don't make this brand any more to my knowledge, but it is a gouge made from about a 1 inch diameter tube that connects to a vacuum. I bought two when Rockler was closing them out for about $25 each. The darn things work great for roughing, a good investment. I think there are other brands available. I just hook it up to a shop vac when roughing.
