This man has forgotten more about tools than most of us will ever know. His collection lives on at the Ken Hawley Trust at Kelham Island Industrial Museum, Sheffield. In this video he talks about his collection and shares some stories. He also shows the tool that got him interested in old tools.
Great video! I would love to go through that entire collection. Andy, you might know the answer to this, are the antique and junk shops around Sheffield littered with old tools and knives that were made in the area?
Sadly no Richard. They are no different to the junk/antique shops in the rest of the country and they don't really stock old tools at all. Depending on where you live, you might find some old tools at car boot sales, but by and large people rely on ebay.co.uk.
Andy, I'm surprised by that. I live in Western Massachusetts and the flea markets/tag sales/barn sales etc are loaded with old tools. There are several dealers within an hours drive from me. Given the long and skilled manufacturing that happened there I would have thought used tools proliferated throughout your neighborhood.
Wonderful video Andy. I think I got a tear in my eye when Mr. Hawley mentioned at the end how privileged he felt to have known so many skilled people there in Sheffield and lived his life during that time period. I was amazed at the size and diversity of the collection.
Great video. +1 on terryR's comment about it just being too short. I liked when Mr. Hawley was talking about his father's micrometer-you could almost feel the connection there.
Thanks for posting this video. I'd just like to be in the same room with that man!
John
