As I sit here waiting for my throat to stop burning so I can go back to bed I needed something to keep me occupied, I guess I could go out and cut some wood but it's 2:30AM and the neighbors might think I am dismembering a body or something, not to mention I actually would like to go back to sleep, I was wondering who else suffers from acid reflux and what you do when you wake up in the middle of the night from the awful burning, bitter, sour taste. Sorry for the long run-on sentence :)

I get it very seldom since my shrieking harpy of a supervisor retired in '07. Stress can cause it, but I find that some foods like boiled beef (stew) will cause it (but grilled beef doesn't, go figure). That said, if I do get it, I sit and sip water to rinse the acid back down where it belongs. Sometimes you'll just have to sleep sitting up. I also have Famotidine for when I end up unintentionally eating something that doesn't agree with me.

This time of morning, I'd agree with no woodworking. You could get hurt with the lessened attention since you're not fully rested.

I had that badly a few years back. My doctor put me on Nexium, which I turned out to be allergic to. He changed me to Cimetidine, which works for me to this day and I can buy on the cheap at Walmart. The stress thing DL talks about is true, mine mostly disappeared since I retired from sales. Ha!!
My wife is on Prilosec, which I personally think is addictive, but each to their own.
The real truth is you have it bad enough that you need to see a doctor, who will evaluate you and recommend a proper remedy. With no care, you could erode your esophagus and cause permanent damage.

It is actually pretty infrequent, Dr did put me on Prilosec which I forget to take occasionally, and yesterday was one of those days. In the last 6 years Ive only had 6-7 bouts of it, the worst was the first time, I was in a motel with nothing to drink but the water out of the faucett and had eaten pepperoni pizza an hour or so before going to bed, I woke up and was immediately on my feet, it felt like I had swallowed nasty bitter, sour lava.

The Dr. has me on 40mg of Omneprozole daily and I have the head of my bed elevated 7" higher than the
footend. I have to forgo certain foods, but can still enjoy a good beer or two occassionaly. Just one more
those things I have to live with.
