I've had pine and oak milled before, but never walnut. Last week a neighbor came to me and said that he had a walnut tree that has been lying at an angle ever since we had a tornado 8 years ago. He asked if I wanted it. I got 2 logs about 6' long. Then there was a tree across the road from my house that went down in the same storm. It was dead, but still had a lot of good wood. So now I have 6 logs to have sawn. Are there any particular ways I should have this cut or just get it all flat sawn?
Thanks guys. My sawyer is a farmer who has a portable mill set up fairly permanently in his barn. I'm not sure he knows how to cut for furniture. He is good at using the mill, but he's not a woodworker. I help him with the milling. He charges me very little and we sit around and have a cold beverage when we're done. It's a pretty good relationship.
Definitely plan to sticker it right. I'll cut up a bunch of scrap such as you just burned up to make stickers. I'll have these ready before I get it milled so that when I go to put it up in the barn it will be ready to start drying. I thought I would take the chain saw and cut all the ends of the logs off a little straighter to ease with painting the ends later. I guess there's no wild walnut growing in South Dakota, but I do like that beetle kill pine you're always showing Monte.
I will post some pictures of before and after. My wife has been having some gastrointestinal problems and has spent about a week in the hospital in the last 3. With my work and everything else, that translates into no time for woodworking.
