Sorry, I just can’t picture in my mind what you are trying to do, but I will throw this out there. I made some tongue drums and is used rubber balls on the mallets. I was able to drill them on the drill press using a brad point bit. Make a little frame the size the ball will fit in to hold it in place and shape while drilling. Drill about 1/2 way through the ball. You could fasten them to whatever you are fastening them to by glueing them to wood dowels.
