I think the question is how uniform you want the color. I’ve been researching this a bit since I’m doing my first major piece with Cherry. I read somewhere that in addition to the blotching solution, Charles Neil recommended two coats of Gel satin poly followed by one coat of General Finished Candelight Gel Stain.
