Anyone tell who made this plane?

A recent 2nd hand store find, I picked up the little rusty plane with a broken tote for $4.99. I cleaned of the rust, re-glued the tote, re-japaaned it, sharpened it, and it works fine. But I could not find any marks on it, except veeeeery faintly on the blade…

NEW YORK

It's not a high end plane: the depth knob is steel, not brass. It seems to be about Stanley #4 in length, but is narrower by about 1/2". It has a corrugated sole. The bed is 8 5/8" long by 2 1/8" w, and the iron is 1 3/4" wide.

It's very possible that this was assembled from various maker's planes, but I don't know. The main bolt that holds down the tote doesn't seem original as it needs that washer to properly pull down the handle. Its likely there was a bolt with a wider head, or some sort of collar originally.

It's nice because it is a size I don't have.

Here's a pile of pics…

with my #4 behind it…

I once had a #6 with an iron like that, and it was stamped as "Savage". Either it is made by Ohio Tool Co., or by Union tool.

Once had a Union #3, and a shot of the #6's iron

Your Ohio info from your blog, DonW, makes me think you and bandit571 are on to something. Comparing the shape & style of the lateral adjuster, and other things, makes me lean towards thinking it is (mostly) an Ohio made Savage. I'd love to see a pic of a "known" Ohio or Ohio Savage #3 for comparison.
