It would have been nice if there was a notification system other than the watch button, like when someone writes your name as for answering to your question or by mentioning you about something.
Yes, this feature would be excellent! It would work something like @name (on Facebook) or +name (on Google+) works. I think it has been proposed in the past, but I think it would really add a lot to the site.
When a user comments in a particular thread, they use their home page to find a thread which may contain responses which are answers to questions. It could potentially eliminate some repeat discussions.
That said, original thought might not actually exist. Each discussion here is had many times, but each take a new form.

that is no problem because it will be selected automatically to offer a link that will notify you, even if they sign their comment with their name and not their username
Another advantage of this set up would be if you wanted to mention someone in a thread which they have not visited. For instance, if you know an expert on a topic should see a thread, you can tag them and they would be notified.
gfadvm makes a good point, though. My display name is "Brandon" but my username is "brandonw." Many people of this site have different display names than usernames. But I don't think this is that big of a hurdle. I really do hope they make this a reality-it'd bring the website into the 2010s.
just found out several posts of people in forum topics asking me something or referring to me, and because is not possible to watch everywhere you commented, it proves the necessity of an automated notification system when your name is mentioned
Any time I leave a comment, I add it to my watch list for 24 hours. Then 'unwatch' it. Works fine for me.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
